1. Do you agree that the Philippines is a collectivist society? Give at least two (2) concrete examples
that would illustrate and support your argument.

Yes, The Philippines is, without a doubt, a collectivist country. In short, collectivism stands for
"we," emphasizing the needs and aspirations of a community or a group. People in nations like
the Philippines appreciate preserving peace and harmony regardless of which group they belong
to. The more interrelated individuals are, the more important it is to everyone’s identity. In the
Philippines, we have a feature that is always there, no matter what scenario the Filipinos are in.
And it is being hospitable and showing fellowship not just to our fellow Filipinos but also to
international visitors to the Philippines. And we've been told since we were children that we're
special. relations that are a component of a circle by respecting the elders, we ensure the well-
being of our family/clan. And our identity is sometimes founded on the social structure imposed
by a group. With a score of 32, the Philippines is deemed a collectivistic society, according to the
Geert Hofstede Center. It's itself in a long-term commitment to the member ‘group,' whether it
be a family, extended family, or extended connection in a collectivist society, loyalty is valued
above all else, and it took priority over most other social rules and regulations. The organization
promotes deep bonds among its members, with everyone taking responsibility for their peers. In
collectivist cultures, offense results in humiliation and loss of face, employer-employee
interactions are viewed morally (akin to a family bond), hiring and promotion choices are made
with the employee's in-group in mind, and so on.

The Bayanihan Spirit" and "Mano o pagmamano" (an honoring gesture to show respect to people
who are older than us, to be specific, the elders) are two of the best examples of the Philippines'
collectivist culture. Bayanihan is a Filipino custom, derived from the Filipino word "bayan," which
means community, nation, or town. The phrase Bayanihan literally means "being in bayan," which
refers to the spirit of community cooperation, effort, and involvement in the pursuit of a common
goal. The spirit of fellowship is present in Bayanihan, where Filipinos encourage one another by
helping in whatever form they can think of. An example of Bayanihan is seen below. We've been
taught the Pagmamano since we were children. This is a means of showing respect for our elders
while also asking for their blessings. Filipinos are known for being family-oriented, devout, and
grateful in a variety of ways. life's aspects Our ideal self begins to form when we are young, and
it continues to evolve throughout the year because of our interactions with our surroundings, as
well as the support of our family and society. Our culture has had a huge influence on our sense
of self.

2. How does our cultural orientation shape/impact our idea of self, especially as a Filipino? Give at
least two (2) concrete examples that would illustrate and support your opinion.

Our cultural background affects or influences our sense of self, particularly as a young person. In
many ways, I'm Filipino. In the sense that we create our culture and tradition as a country, our
cultural legacy determines who we are. Our community is built on the foundation of shared ideas
and methods. We've come a long way to create our own uniqueness Fiesta is a one-of-a-kind
event that is exclusively found in the Philippines. In other nations, this isn't done. Close familial
relationships are another feature that distinguishes Filipinos. Other countries are aware of our
situation. Another example is the Filipinos' work ethic. In the past few years, I've seen that

individuals have become overly excited about labeling themselves as "individualists," despite the
fact that we Filipinos prioritize the well-being of our families/clans, are connected with a group,
and have a strong sense of obligation.
