The A/F sensor has a characteristic of providing output voltage* approximately proportional to the existing air-fuel ratio. The A/F sensor output voltage is used to provide for the ECM with feedback to control the air-fuel ratio, By the A/F sensor output, the ECM can determine the deviation amount from the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and tps simyalléata.comirepaitrepaifatcle4 108 Veomponertl3626itype/42Sinonstandarsi1901430/seRetLinualse 168 osriarozt ‘the accurate air-fuel ratio control The A/F sensor is equipped with a heater which heats the zirconia element, The heater is controlled by the ECM. “Troubleshooting (ALL Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC })- ALLDATA Repair control the proper fuel injection timing immediately. If the A/F sensor is malfunctioning, ECM is unable to perform When the intake air volume is low (the temperature of the exhaust gas is low), current flows to the heater to heat the sensor for the accurate oxygen concentration detection, + The voltage value changes inside the ECM only. HINT: - This DTC is related to the A/F sensor, although the caption is the oxygen sensor. ~ The ECM provides a pulse to control current through the heater, The heated oxygen sensor heater circuit uses a relay on the B+ side of the circuit MONITOR DESCRIPTION Monitor Strategy ees eensn component ips Sopenmeot gran Typical Enabling Conditions Case 1: High current mor tn whan ing TCR era Pose ony oo ce [eat ge sat Case 2: Low current esa ay ee ea ormre Typical Malfunction Thresholds. The sensor detects oxygen levels in the exhaust gas and sends this signal to the ECM The inner surface of the sensor element is exposed to outside air, The outer surface of the sensor element is exposed to exhaust gases, The sensor element is made of platinum coated zirconia and includes an integrated heating element. The zirconia element generates a smalll voltage when there is a large difference in the oxygen concentrations of the exhaust and the outside ait. The platinum coating amplifies the voltage generation. When heated, the sensor becomes very efficient. Ifthe temperature of the exhaust is low, the sensor will not generate useful voltage signals without supplemental heating, The ECM regulates the supplemental heating using a duty- cycle approach to regulate the average current in the heater element. if the heater current is out of the normal range the sensor's output signals will be inaccurate and the ECM cannot regulate the air-fuel ratio properly. When the heater current is out of the normal operating range, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction in the A/F sensor heater circuit and sets a DTC.
