Food Components and Nutritional Value


Food Science is a broad area of study that can shed light upon such important concerns as food safety
and food quality.

Food Compositions
Foods are divided and labeled into three parts. It is the GO, GROW and GLOW.
GO foods – contain the Grains Group. It provides the body with energy.
GROW foods – contain the Milk and the Meat & Beans Group Foods that help the body grow and develop
strong bones and muscles.
GLOW foods – contains Vegetables and Fruits Group Foods that supply the body with Vitamins and
Minerals to keep the body healthy and functioning properly.

Basic Components of Foods

 Water – primarily substance in fresh foods


 Fats – able to dissolve certain flavors, nutrients and colors that water cannot
 Protein – building blocks of life.
 Carbohydrates – it provides the energy of an individual
 Acids and Alkalis – balances the body’s’ acidity and alkalinity
