What are the Elements?

Most people know that editorials reflect the viewpoint of the newspaper. But an editorial is more
than opinion. Editorial writers must include statistics, details and examples to support their
opinions. To make the editorial more effective, the writer must present and challenge arguments
of others who have a different opinion. The writer then appeals to the reader to side with the
newspaper on the issue.

Editorial: Extrajudicial Killing

Journal editorial board May 27, 2016

FIVE suspected criminals were gunned down for the past three days. Three of whom
were teenagers suspected of robbery and theft while the other two were alleged drug peddlers.
Some may have already been desensitized by these kinds of incidents and simply say ‘they had it
coming.’ Others may have already accepted it as a brand of justice here in Davao City. Yet it is
quite disheartening to know that the summary executions of suspected criminals have become
such a cliché in the city that it has earned a tolerable state among some Dabawenyos. Some are
even proud of it. Vigilantes, paid mercenaries and their funders can easily claim that they have
resorted to such actions because of the so-called rotten justice system that is currently being run,
a justice system wherein law enforcers bear more of the burden in proving that a drug suspect is
indeed guilty even though if the latter has already been caught red-handed. They also cry foul
over how long it takes to prosecute criminals claiming that it takes years before a suspect gets a
verdict in court. Some, meanwhile, say that we have been spending too much on our taxes to
keep the criminals healthy in jail while some of the drug addicts stay in the rehabilitation center.
While we acknowledge that the current restorative justice that our country is following still has a
lot of holes to be filled in terms of efficiency, we should remain hopeful that in time it would be
able to uphold the law and serve justice. The solution lies on improving our justice system and
admittedly this wouldn’t happen overnight. Killing a suspect, on the other hand, simply leads to
more injustices. Worse, it allows us to embrace the culture of impunity wherein we allow those
behind the killings go scot free. No one is above the law as the cliché says but more importantly,
no one has the right to take someone’s life just based on suspicions or investigations conducted
outside the jurisdiction of the law. For this, we still and will forever condemn extrajudicial
killings.

Appeal to reader It makes reader to think that extrajudicial
killing should not be implemented because we
all know that killing is not a good idea to
punish criminals. It is more like injustice.
Instead of killing them, why not imprison and
rehabilitate them until they become in a good
condition again. Extrajudicial killing should
be condemned forever.
