F.Y.B.C.S. STC1203
Tests based on t distributions.

1. To know the breaking strength of the steel rods a sample of 14 rods was tested.
It gave the following results in the units of 1000 lbs:
14,17,15,20,18,20,16,16,14,16,19,18,16,17
Test whether the average breaking strength of the steel rods is 18000 lbs.
(Use  = 0.01)

2. A soft drink wending machine is set to dispense 8 ounces per cup. If the machine
was tested 9 times yielding a mean cup fill of 7.9 ounces with a s.d. of 0.3
ounces, can we conclude that the machine dispenses less than 8 ounces per cup?
( = 0.01)

3. Six guinea pigs injected with 0.5mg of a medication took on an average 15.4
seconds to fall asleep with a S.D of 2.2 seconds, while six other guinea pigs
injected with 1.5mg of medication took an average 11.2 seconds to fall asleep
with a S.D of 2.6 seconds.Test the hypothesis that the difference in dosage has no
effect on the average time to fall asleep at 5% l.o.s ?

4. The productivity of 12 workers was observed during one week when they were
without supervision and during another week when they were under strict
supervision. The following scores provide a measure of their productivity:
Worker A B C D E F G H I J K L
Without 72 52 83 88 58 30 82 83 40 66 76 63
supervisio
n
With 81 59 78 85 60 50 77 79 53 68 89 67
supervisio
n
Do the data indicate that strict supervision increases the productivity? ( = 0.05)
