Question: What is the best material for Collecting
Electrode (CE) and Discharge Electrode (DE)?

Answer: SPCC (lifetime 5-10 years)

Mechanical
Question: What problems which are usually observed in
ESP? Casing
Answer:
• Casing leakage
• Dust build-up
• Corrosion, eroded or detached
• Worn out rapping system parts
• Misalignment

Question: How much damage can be allowed

for CE and DE?

Is it time for CE and DE replacement?

Mechanical
Answer:

CP~DE CP~DE
Space Treatment Measures
150mm 200mm
For temporary remedy, we can reinforce CE
with flat bar for alignment.
Problematic CEs can be removed from ESP
Collecting
± 15mm ± 20mm but the allowable amount is 10% of total in
Electrodes
1 field. If more than 10% of problematic
CEs were observed, replacing CEs for 1 field
can be considered.
Problematic DEs can be removed from ESP
but the allowable amount is 10% of total in
Discharge
± 15mm ± 20mm 1 field. If more than 10% of problematic
Electrodes DEs were observed, replacing DEs for 1
field can be considered.
Mechanical
Question: How much improvement can be achieved if
spiral DEs are replaced by RDE?

Answer: It will depend on which field you are going to

replace spiral DE to RDE. RDE will be good if installed in 1st
field. Spiral DE will be good for last field (e.g. 3rd or 4th field).
For the 1st field, RDE will help to increase mA value with the
same kV value as the existing DE (spiral DE, V type DE, etc.)
because RDE has a lower onset voltage then the other DE
types.

Question: Dust build-up is observed on CEs and DEs

but the rapping system works normally. What is the
possible cause?

Answer: It can be caused by leakage from casing,

access door, inlet duct and nozzle. Dust will become
sticky due to moisture and is hard to be dislodged by
rapping system.
Mechanical
Question: How much damage can be allowed
for rapping system?

Is it the time for rapping system replacement?

Mechanical
Answer:

1~3mm 4~6mm 7mm more

Mild wear Moderate wear Severe wear

Mechanical
Question: What is the ideal rapping time setting?

Answer: For every 6-10mmT of dust accumulated on CEs,

rapping should be initiated.
t (sec) = Deposited dust [kg]/ Dust rate [kg/s]
(A.h.ρ/ (Q.W.%)

• t = time to rapping (s)

• Q = flow rate (m3/hr.)
• W = dust concentration (g/m3)
• A = collecting area (m2)
• h = dust thickness (0.01 m)
• ρ = dust density (0.8 kg/m3)
• % = efficiency of 1 field (70%)
Mechanical
Question: How much temperature which is
appropriate for insulators?

Answer: 80 – 100 ℃
Mechanical
Question: Rapping and support insulators are
frequently broken, what is the cause and how to
prevent it?
Mechanical
Answer:

1. Electrical shock on the surface

2. Uneven loading

Spark
Mechanical
Answer:
3. Dust build up
4. Heating System Failure
Mechanical
Answer: Insulator Maintenance
1. Keep surface dry – regular check on heating system
2. Keep surface clean – cleaning on each EP shutdown
3. Check DE frame balance after insulator replacement
