South Africa Demographics Profile

Based on current projections, South Africa’s population will continue to grow until 2082,
reaching just over 80 million people before plateauing and slightly declining the rest of the
century. South Africa’s population growth rate is currently 1.28% per year.

South Africa’s birth rate is 19.995 births per 1,000 people and its death rate is 9.3 deaths per
1,000 people. The birth rate is more than double the death rate in South Africa. Additionally,
the fertility rate is 2.372 births per woman, well above the population replacement rate of 2.1
births per woman. While the birth and fertility rates are both high, they have each decreased
annually, indicating the slowing of South Africa’s population growth.

Turning to demographics, the bureau in charge of providing statistics provided an estimate in

2010, which included five racial groups. Of the total South African population at the time,
79.4 percent declared themselves to be Black African while 9.2 percent were shown as
White, 8.8 percent coloured and 2.6 percent Indian or Asian. There was a final category
shown as unspecified / other but the results were negligible and as such were ultimately
omitted.

The country uses 11 official languages, including Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, English, Sepedi,
Setswana, Sesotho, Xitsonga, Swati, Tshivenda, and Ndebele.

DEMOGRAPHICS OF EGYPT
Egypt has a population of about 102 million people. According to current projections,
Egypt’s population is expected to double by 2078. The population is currently growing at a
rate of 1.94%, a rate that adds about 2 million people to the population every year.

Egypt’s fertility rate is about 3.3 births per woman, well above the population replacement
rate of 2.1 births per woman. Egypt has a relatively young population, where about 60% of
the population is under 30 years old.

The rapidly increasing population poses a threat to the Egyptian economy, where one-third of
people live below the poverty line and the unemployment rate is around 10%.

Ethnic Egyptians account for 91% of the total population. The largest ethnic minorities
include the Turks, Greeks, Abazas, and Bedouin Arab tribes in the Sinai Peninsula and the
deserts to the east, as well as the Siwis in the Siwa Oasis and the Nubian people along the
Nile.

The official language is Arabic, while other widely understood and spoken languages by the
upper classes include English and French.

Approximately 2.7 million Egyptians are found living abroad, as estimated by the
International Organization for Migration. These include the Arab countries, like Saudi
Arabia, Libya, Jordan and Kuwait, where 70% of the Egyptian immigrants reside. The rest of
the 30% inhabit Europe and North America (90,000 in Italy, 110,000 in Canada and 318,000
in the United States). Constituting 91%, Ethnic Egyptians are the leading group of Egypt’s
population.
DEMOGRAPHICS OF NIGERIA
Nigeria has the largest population in Africa. The United Nations project that the overall
population of Nigeria will reach about 401.31 million by the end of the year 2050. By 2100,
if current figures continue, the population of Nigeria will be over 728 million.

According to the Census Bureau of the United States, the population of Nigeria will surpass
that of the United States in 2047, when the population of Nigeria will reach 379.25 million.
With those numbers, Nigeria will become the third most populated country in the world.

The major contributors to Nigeria’s population growth are early marriages, high birth rates,
and a lack of family planning access. The birth rate in Nigeria is about 37 births per 1,000
people.

When it comes to the average of a Nigerian citizen, the country is relatively young. For both
males and females, the median age of the country is actually 18.4 years of age. The split
between the males and the females in Nigeria are quite even. Men take the edge in numbers,
but not by much. There are, according to estimates, about 1.04 males to every 1 female in the
country. It should be noted, though, that while women are slightly outnumbered by men, after
the age of 65, women outnumber the number of men.

There are multiple ethnic groups in Nigeria. The Hausa-Fulani ethnicity outnumbers every
other ethnic group, accounting for about 30% of the population. A majority of the Hausa-
Fulani are of the Muslim faith. The second-largest ethnic group is the Yoruba, accounting for
15.5% of the population, followed by the Igbo (Ibo), comprising about 15.2% of the
population.

The official language of Nigeria is English, but the country does feature multiple languages.
The most common non-English languages include the language of Hausa, the language of
Yoruba, and the language of Igbo. Those three languages are the most widespread, apart from
the language of English.
