What’s Your Clothing Style?
I think people used to dress better than they do now. In old movies, men always
wore suits and ties. Women always wore dresses—even when they’re out running
errands. Nowadays, people wear casual clothes all the time. I find this a little
annoying at times. I guess I’m old-fashioned. I like to look good, so I buy high-quality

Alec clothes that fit me well. I don’t like cheap clothing. I’d rather have a few nice things
than a lot of ugly ones.

Fashion is my hobby. I taught myself how to make clothes. Sometimes I look through
celebrity magazines to find outfits that I like. I like to try and figure out how to make
the different clothes. I don’t care about brands. I just care about style. And I like to
have clothes that no one else at my school has. For example, I recently made a skirt

Hanna from bright blue silk. It also has a pink flower pattern. It looks amazing. In the future,
I may become a designer.

We have to wear a uniform at my school. That’s fine with me. Without a uniform,
there are too many options. I don’t want to spend every morning figuring out what
to wear. Plus, I can’t stand shopping. On the weekends, I wear loose, comfortable
clothes, like jeans, T-shirts, and sneakers. When I need new clothes, I often go to a

Cristy secondhand store. Some of my friends think I should try to follow the fashion trends,
but I disagree.

Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.

Choosing After-School Activities by Ian Moffat, age 16

High school isn’t just about academics. It’s a good idea to join at least one club or activity. But there are so
many choices that it can be hard to make a decision. If you have this problem, follow my advice: just keep
trying until you find a suitable one.

When I started high school, I joined the Dance Club. They choose songs and create their own dance moves
to go with them. Then they perform for the whole school. Two of my friends joined, so I did, too. I asked
myself, “How hard could it be?”

Well, it was harder than I thought. I’m not very athletic, so the dances were hard. I tried for several weeks,
but I never improved. Some of the members tried to help me, but others were annoyed. I felt, bad, so I quit
and looked for something else.

My next choice was the Spanish Club. That experience was far better than the first one. My parents are
from Spain, so I speak the language pretty well. The club members were very nice—but they were all
beginners. It just wasn’t very interesting for me, and I left.

The third club that I tried was the Volunteer Club. Members volunteer at different places and help other
students find volunteer work, too. Right now, I’m working at the public library two days a week. I find
books for people and help them use the computers. Sometimes, I read stories to children. It’s fun, and I feel
good about helping others. It took a while, but I finally found the right club for me.

14. What does Ian recommend? 15. What can we guess about Ian?
