THE RENAISSANCE ART

Renaissance is a French word which means "rebirth". In the history of art, it


appeared in the 15th century which is considered as one of the highest moments
of civilization. The Renaissance ushered in a new period outlook on man and the
world. The period saw the widening of horizons through navigation and maritime
expeditions. In 1492, Christopher Columbus set foot to the new world now
America, then in 1521 Ferdinand Magellan landed in Cebu, Philippines. The era
of colonization had begun.

It was during the renaissance period when the classical Greek idea on the
development of "ideal man" with a sound mind and healthy body was pursued.
The idea of lineral education flourished during the Renaissance era with
emphasis on arts and sciences to constitute "a well-rounded education"

The artists of the Renaissance were versatile. Da Vinci made numerous studies
of the human body in movement, while Michael Angelo painted the frescoes of
the Sistine Chapel.

Although religious subjects remain, figures from classical mythology became


popular such as Apollo and Venus to reveal the beauty of human physique.

Renaissance era was the golden age of theatre in England, William


Shakespeare, the great dramatists of all time produced his memorable.

Tragedies for the Elizabeth stages like Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, and
comedies such as Merchant of Venice, As You Like it, and The Tempest.

Art in this period was a combination of religion and superstition. Crist and the
saints were presented with their monster counterparts in hell as influenced by
earlier myths.
