RIZAL AND THE LESSONS HIS MOTHER TAUGHT HIM

Of all the persons who had the greatest influence on Rizal’s development as a
person was his mother Teodora Alonso. It was she who opened his eyes and
heart to the world around him—with all its soul and poetry, as well as its bigotry
and injustice.

His mother was his first teacher, and from her he learned to read, and
consequently to value reading as a means for learning and spending one’s time
meaningfully. It did not take long before he learnt to value time as life’s most precious
gift, for she taught him never to waste a single second of it. Thus as a student in Spain
he became the most assiduous of students, never missing a class despite his activities
as Propaganda leader, or an examination, despite having to take it on an empty
stomach. By his example, he inspired his compatriots – those who had sunk into a life
of dissipation, wasting time and allowances on gambling and promiscuity- to return to
their studies and deserve their parents’ sacrifices back home.

From his mother he learnt the primacy of improving oneself- thus growing up he
took pains to comprehend the logic of mathematics; to write poems; to draw, and
sculpt; to paint. Sadly, for all these he earned not only glory but also the fear of
myopic souls.

Saturnina Rizal, the eldest sister of Jose, was truly a caring ate. She diligently reported
daily events and happenings in Calamba and told stories in vivid detail about the Rizal
family, when Jose was overseas. During Rizal's hardships abroad, Saturnina sent him a
diamond ring to help him with his finances.

Rizal's greatest influence, for example, was his older brother Paciano. Paciano Rizal
successfully served as Jose's guardian and hero. He was the second of eleven children
in the family of Don Francisco Mercado and Doña Teodora Alonso, of which Jose was
the youngest. (mas okey siguro kung pagsasamahin to at yung sa mother nya

Narcisa Rizal (1852-1939) or simply 'Sisa' was the third child in the family. Like
Saturnina, Narcisa helped in financing Rizal's studies in Europe, even pawning her
jewelry and peddling her clothes if needed. It is said she could recite from memory
almost all of the poems of the national hero.

Maria Rizal - She was known for being a disciplinarian as well as a dedicated,
courteous and hard- working mother. As the young Rizal's first teacher, she had a
profound influence on his development and was his inspiration in taking up medicine
Trinidad Rizal (1868-1951) or 'Trining' was the tenth child and the custodian of Rizal's
last and greatest poem. ... In August 1893, Trinidad, along with their mother, joined
Rizal in Dapitan and resided with him in his casa cuadrada (square house). It is said
that Trinidad had once planned Rizal's escape from his exile.

The uncles who were brothers of his mother also had much influence on the early
childhood of Jose Rizal. The youngest uncle named Jose, took care of teaching
regular lessons to Rizal. His huge uncle Manuel developed his physique until he had a
body of silk and steel and no longer a skinny and sickly boy.

Uncle Jose Alberto- Took care of teaching regular lessons to Rizal.

Uncle Manuel Alberto- seeing Rizal frail in body, concerned himself with the physical
development of his young nephew and taught the latter love for the open air and
developed in him a great admiration for the beauty of nature
Uncle Gregorio- a scholar, instilled into the mind of the boy love for education. He
advised Rizal: “Work hard and perform every task very carefully; learn to be swift as
well as thorough; be independent in thinking and make visual pictures of everything.”

Maestro Celestino- His 1st tutor of Jose Rizal

Maestro Lucas Padua- His 2nd tutor of Jose Rizal
Leon Monroy- Former classmate of Rizal’s Father, became a boy’s tutor.
