TELAGA WARNA
Long long ago, there was a kingdom in West Java. The kingdom was ruled by a king
named His Majesty Prabu. Prabu was a kind and wise king. But it was a pity that Prabu and
his queen hadn't got any children. The queen often cried. That was why Prabu went to the
jungle. There he prayed to God every day, begging for a child.
A few months later, the queen got pregnant. Nine months later, a princess was born.
Prabu and Queen loved their beautiful daughter so much. They gave whatever she wanted.
It made Princess turn into a very spoiled girl.
One day, the princess celebrated her 17 th birthday. Many people gathered in the
palace. Then, Prabu took out a necklace which was made from gold and jewel. "My beloved
daughter, today I give you this necklace. Please, wear this necklace," said Prabu. "I don't
want to wear it! It's ugly!" shouted the princess. Then she threw the necklace. The beautiful
necklace was broken. The gold and jewels were spread out on the floor. Everybody couldn't
say anything. They never thought that their beloved princess would do that cruel thing. In
their silence, people heard the queen crying. Every woman felt sad and began crying, too.
Then, everybody was crying.
Suddenly, from the underground, a spring emerged. It made a pool of water. Soon, the
place became a big lake. The lake finally sank the kingdom. Nowadays, people called the
lake " Telaga Warna". It means "Lake of Color". On a bright day, the lake is full of color.
These colors come from shadows of forest, plants, flowers, and sky around the lake. But
some people said that the colors are from the princess's necklace, which spreads at the

Orientation A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West
Sumatra lived a woman and her son, Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang
and his mother had to live hard because his father passed away when
he was a baby. Malin Kundang was a healthy, dilligent, and strong boy.
He usually went to sea to catch fish. After getting fish he would bring it
to his mother, or sell the caught fish in the town.
Conflict/ Complication One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant’s
ship being raided by a band of pirates. With his bravery, Malin Kundang
helped the merchant defeat the pirates. To thank him, the merchant
allowed Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed in the
hope to get a better life. He left his mother alone.
Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He had a
huge ship and a lot of crews who worked loading trading goods. He was
also married to a beautiful woman. When he was sailing on his trading
journey, his ship landed on a coast near a small village. The local
people recognized that it was Malin Kundang, a boy from the area. The
news ran fast in the town; “Malin Kundang has become rich and now he
is here”. An old woman, who was Malin Kundang’s mother, ran to the
beach to meet the new rich merchant. She wanted to hug him to
release her sadness of being lonely after a long time. When his mother
came near him, Malin Kundang who was with his beautiful wife and his
ship crews denied that she was his mother. She had pleaded Malin
Kundang to look at her and admit that she was her mother. But he kept
refusing to do it and yelling at her. At last Malin Kundang said to her
“Enough, old woman! I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and
ugly woman!” After that he ordered his crews to set sail to leave the old
woman who was then full of sadness and anger.
Resolution Finally, feeling enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he
would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize to her. Malin Kundang just
laughed and set sail. Suddenly a thunderstorm came in the quiet sea,

The Golden Star-Fruit Tree

A long time ago there was a rich old man living in Vietnam. He had two sons with different
attitudes. The older brother was very greedy and the younger brother was very kind. When the old man
died, the brothers divided his father’s wealth into two parts. The big brother took almost everything.
He gave his younger brother only a small piece of land, with a star-fruit tree in front of it. From then on
the younger one lived there and made his living only by selling star fruits from the tree.
The star fruit tree had an exceptional amount of fruits. Unfortunately, a very big raven often
came and ate all the ripe fruits. At first he was too afraid of the raven, and did not know what to do.
But one day he dared to approach the raven. He begged to it not to eat the fruits. Surprisingly the
raven was not angry. He said that he will pay the fruits with gold. From then on, the younger brother
and his family could live happily in luxury.
On the commemoration of his father’s death, the younger brother invited his older brother to
come to his house. At first the big brother refused to come. But because his younger brother insisted,
he and his wife finally decided to come. When they got to the younger brother’s house, they were
surprised to see that he was now very rich. He asked his younger brother how he had got all his
wealth and the younger brother was happy to tell him the truth. Then the greedy brother and his wife
offered the younger brother to trade all their fortune for the star-fruit tree. The younger  brother gladly
accepted the offer.
When the raven came for the star fruits, the older brother made the same plea. As expected,
the raven told him to bring a 1-meter long bag. Because he was greedy, he asked his wife to make a
much longer bag. Because the load became too heavy for the raven, it swayed, and the greedy
brother fell straight down to the sea with his bag and pockets full of gold. He sank very fast down the
sea. The older brother finally died. He died because of his greediness.

Read the text and answer the questions based on the text below.

One day, a scorpion wanted to cross a river. The river was wide and swift, so he
thought he had to turn back.
Suddenly, he saw a frog sitting in the rushes by the bank of the stream on the other
side of the river. He decided to ask the frog for help getting across the stream.
“Hello, Mr. Frog!” called the scorpion across the water. “Would you be so kind as to
give me a ride on your back across the river?”
“Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you won’t try to kill
me?” asked the frog hesitantly.
“Because,” the scorpion replied, “if I try to kill you, then I would die too, because I
cannot swim, you see!”
So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. The scorpion crawled onto
the frog’s back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog’s soft hide, and the frog slid into the
river.
Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of
the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog’s back. A deadening
numbness began to creep into his limbs.
“You fool!” croaked the frog. “Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?”
The scorpion shrugged, and said, “I could not help myself. It is my nature.”
Then they both sank into the water of the swiftly flowing river.
The scorpion died instantly. For the frog, knowing that he would die soon, he swam
as fast as he could to the bank of the river. He didn’t want to die in the river, but on his land.
Strangely, he arrived there safely. Perhaps the scorpion’s sting disappeared in the water. Or
perhaps his body was immune to the scorpion’s sting. But in my opinion, he didn’t die
because he had done something good.

WHY DOES THE BEAR HAVE NOT A TAIL?

One afternoon, a mouse deer was sitting in a pit, eating nuts. He heard a tiger
was coming closer and he thought the tiger was going to eat him. The mouse deer was
very scared and his heart beat so hard. Then, an idea came to his mind and he made a
loud noise of chewing nuts, saying, "Wow, how delicious is this tiger's eye!" He repeated
it for five times. Tiger, the king of jungle, was so scared to hear that and he moved back.
Tiger met a bear on the way and he said, "Hey, Bear. Do you hear what did the
animal on the pit over there, eating tiger's eyes?"
Bear said, "I don't know, Your Majesty,"
Tiger said, "Then let's see."
Bear replied "But I'm scared, Your Majesty"
Tiger said, "Don't worry. Let's make a deal with me. We're going to stay together, uniting
our tails. If anything happens, both of us will face it."
Tiger and Bear tied their tails and moved into the pit with full cautions because
they were expecting to see a big enemy. The mouse deer was surprised again. He
thought quickly and yelled, "Oh, that's the glutton tiger! His father owes us a white bear,
now he will pay us with a black bear. Come on black, over here."
Bear was so surprised. "Hey, it's a Tiger's trick! He wanted to use me to pay his father's
debt!" Bear went into a panic, which also made Tiger panic because they were tied each
other.

6
Accidentally, Tiger stepped on the Bear's tail, and then jumped. Bear was beaten
on the ground hard, and his tail was cut off. That's why Bear doesn't have long tail. Thus
the mouse deer escaped from the tiger twice.

Cindelaras
Folklore from East Java

RADEN Putra was the king of Jenggala kingdom. He had a beautiful queen. The king
also had a beautiful concubine. Unlike the queen, the concubine had bad personalities. She
was jealous with the queen, so she planned to make the queen leave the palace. By doing
so, she could be the new queen.
The concubine asked the palace healer to help her do the bad plan. They told the
king that the queen wanted to poison him. The king was angry. He sent the queen to the
jungle. The king did not know the queen was pregnant.
9
After several months in the jungle, the queen gave birth to a healthy baby boy. She
called him Cindelaras. He grew up as a nice, healthy, and handsome young man.
One day, while Cindelaras helped her mother to collect some fire woods, an eagle
dropped an egg. He took the egg and carefully took care of it. The egg hatched into a chick
and then it became a strong rooster. The rooster had a magical skill. It was very powerful
and skilful in fighting with other roosters. The rooster could also sing. The song was about
Cindelaras and his father, Raden Putra. “My master is Cindelaras. He lives in the jungle. His
father is a king. His name is Raden Putra.” The rooster often sang the song.
When Cindelaras first heard that song, he ignored it. However, he could not stand it
anymore. He talked to his mother about it. His mother told him the whole story. Cindelaras
was very surprised.
He decided to go to the palace to meet the king, his father. Cindelaras also brought
his rooster to go to the palace. On the way to go there, he met some people. They asked
him to fight his rooster with their roosters. Cindelaras’ rooster won the fight. He won again
and again. Cindelaras great rooster was heard by King Raden Putra. So, he invited
Cindelaras to the palace to fight his rooster with the king’s rooster. The king made a bet. If
Cindelaras’ rooster won the fight, he would get all king’s jeweleries. However, if Cindelaras’s
rooster lost, he would be punished in a jail. The two roosters fought bravely. In just few
minutes, Cindelaras’ rooster won the fight! Then, the rooster sang the song. The king was
