Student Teacher Lesson Plan Format

Subject: Social Studies

Standard(s):
SS:CV:6:4.1: Evaluate those characteristics that promote good citizenship, e.g.,
individual responsibility or respect for the rights and decisions of others.
(Themes: A: Conflict and Cooperation, B: Civic Ideals, Practices, and
Engagement)

Objective(s): At the end of this lesson my students will be able to talk about the
civics of a bee colony and how it is related to the human workforce.

Resources/Materials List:
● Venn Diagram Worksheet

Procedure:
1. Read the article “Roles of Bees in a Hive” as a group.
2. Discuss each role within a hive. Have the students take notes of brief
descriptions of each role. Use the two-column notes method.
3. Walk around with a basket/hat with jobs related to the article and have
each student choose a job out of the hat or basket.
4. Tell the class that they will be comparing their given job to a role in the
hive as stated in the article. Tell the students they will have to choose what
role fits their given job.
5. Hand out the Venn Diagram worksheets. Have the students turn in the
worksheets.

Plans for differentiation:

● Allow students to use a computer to type their notes instead of
handwriting them.
● Hand print outs of the notes to students who may be slower writers.

Plans for accommodation/modification:

● Those with a specific learning disability may need a scribe as well as print-
out notes to allow the student to be on the same page as the class. The
student’s para may also scribe the venn diagram as well.
● A student with autism may find the perspective of a different role/bee’s
role difficult. Allow this student to write about their findings for both topics
on a separate worksheet.
● The teacher will review the students’ individual Venn Diagram worksheets
and student notes to determine the class’ understanding of this content.

Assessment: The students will write a diary entry describing their day as a bee
and its role.

What’s next? The class will continue to discuss civics of citizens within a society
by analyzing other cultures.
