NEWMAN, PART I − INTRODUCTION TO “HOW TO

DELIVER AN EVANGELISTIC MESSAGE,”
BY BILL NEWMAN

John Stott says, “We must never issue an appeal without first making the
proclamation. Much harm has been done to the souls of men and much
dishonor to the name of Christ to neglect this simple rule. The Gospel is not
fundamentally an invitation to anything. It is a declaration of what God has
done in Christ on the cross for our salvation. The invitation cannot properly be
given before the declaration has been given. Men must grasp the truth before
they respond to it. On the other hand, we must never make the proclamation
without giving— issuing—an appeal. It is not enough to teach the Gospel; we
must urge men to embrace it.”

So that’s our responsibility in sharing with you—explaining the delivery of an

evangelistic message and giving the invitation. And it was Stephen Olford that
said this well: “All preaching should be a declaration of the grace of God to
human need on the authority of Scripture with a view to claiming a verdict.”
