CHAPTER 4: TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND MACHINE OPERATING PRINCIPLE 4.1

Zhermack S.p.A. designs and manufactures work instruments that provide cutting-edge
technology and first-rate quality. They are specially designed to provide made-to-measure
solutions that offer long-lasting performance every single day of their working life.

In making these products Zhermack S.p.A. makes use of the latest design tools, thus ensuring
that all finished machine is as functional as possible. Use of only top-quality materials and
thorough testing aimed at providing maximum user safety are an Zhermack S.p.A. constant,
making our products safe and internationally competitive.

The TALETE saw has been designed for the high-precision cutting of models made from plaster
or from other dental materials (specified in the following sub-sections) in order to separate the
segments from the models themselves.
The machine uses special diamond cutters designed for perfect, extremely narrow cuts.
In order to avoid damaging the model’s adjoining parts, cutting operations must be performed in
a vibration-free setting: the machine has been specially designed with this in mind, and its
rigidity guarantees the quality of the final result.

The machine’s functional features 4.1.1

The main functional features of the TALETE saw are as follows:

• it clamps the model you are cutting the segment from;
• it carefully positions the cutter blade at the cutting point;
• it performs an incremental, precise cut (sensitive feed);
• it gives the operator a good view of operations, thus also ensuring adequate protection from
any potential dangers.

Manufacturer’s specifications: Mechanical Components 4.1.2

The TALETE saw is composed of the following mechanical parts:

Basic structure (base and upright):

The TALETE saw consists of a base and an upright section: together they give the machine
strength and compactness.
The base: this is made from 15/10 mm-thick, epoxy-resin coated plate; it also houses some of
the machine’s electrical parts, as well as its magnetic chuck. The upright is bolted to the base.
The upright: this is made from aluminium alloy, subsequently milled in order to guarantee
maximum precision fitting.

TALETE 15 of 52
MAINTENANCE AND USE MANUAL

Handgrip and motor support:

both are made from sand-cast aluminium, subsequently worked on a milling-machine and
lathe.
The unit supports the motor, and must guarantee the precision of angular movement in order
to maintain the inclination of the cut with respect to the working level. This is done by means of
a calibrated pin that rotates on a brass ferrule situated in the special machined housing located
in the upright.

Model Support:
This consists of a steel base (to be fastened to the magnetic chuck) and a vice which grips the
model to be cut. The model is clamped in the vice using a screw with a knob which makes it
easier to tighten the claws of the vice.
The clamping of the model in its cutting position is achieved using a lever that acts on an
eccentric pin.

Tools:
The tool used is a circular diamond cutter 0,2 - 0,3 mm. in thickness.
The cutter is clamped to the motor shaft by means of two lock nuts which are tightened using
the special spanners supplied. For safety’s sake, the two lock nuts have a left-hand thread (the
motor rotates in the opposite direction).
Any fault in the shape of the cutter or its incorrect mounting would mean poor cutting and
possible damage to the cutter itself.

Filter suction:
An aspirator with a capacity of 290 m3/h ensures that the dust produced during cutting is
sucked up and collected in a special filter box.

4.1.3 Manufacturer’s specifications: Electrical Parts

The TALETE saw is composed of the following electrical parts:

Magnetic chuck – Motor:

The circular magnetic chuck is fed at 40 Vcc with an electrical input of 460 mA; the force of
attraction is approximately 100 N, which is enough to secure the models to the support during
cutting operations.
The motor has a power of 45W and is of the manifold type: it has a max. speed of 6,000 rpm.

Switches:
The front left-hand switch (1) powers the magnetic chuck (3) while, at the same time, sending
the command to static relay RS2 to enable the aspirator.
The front right-hand switch (7) gives the command to static relay RS1 to start up the motor
ready for cutting (this happens if you press the front left-hand switch (1) at the same time).

The compartment housing the machine’s electrical control components does

not guarantee IP54 standard protection: thus the machine may not be used in
rooms where there is dripping water or water spray. Moreover, the correct wor-
king of the air-filter system is of vital importance as it prevents dust getting into
the said compartment.

explosive and/or at risk of fire as it has not been designed for use in such areas.
Nevertheless, should a fire accidentally break out follow the procedure described
in paragraph 2.4.
Work area lighting is an important factor in both personnel safety and the
ultimate quality of the work being done. In Italy lighting must comply with a
Ministerial Decree Law that clearly defines minimum lighting requirements.
In other countries lighting requirements form part of the accident prevention
and workplace hygiene standards.

Suction / aeration 6.2.1

The TALETE saw does not have to be used in a specially aerated room. In order to reduce the
plaster or resin dust produced during the separation of the element, the machine is equipped
with its own incorporated aspirator complete with filters.

Those particles that are not blocked by the filter could cause physical harm. It
is the user’s duty to verify the nature and toxicity of the materials being worked,
and to take any necessary precautions.

6.3 REQUIRED WORK SPACE

Choosing a good workplace with an appropriate amount of space available for machine
installation is an essential factor in personnel safety, the quality of the work and proper
maintenance. This zone must not only be spacious enough to allow for optimum machine
operation but must also be well illuminated, aired, not dusty and not exposed to direct sun-
light.

6.3.1 Worktops

The machine has been designed for use on a rigid worktop parallel to the floor.
Suitable worktops include service furniture (where the operator is standing) or modelling tables
(where work is done sitting down). All worktops must be checked for stability.

CONNECTING UP TO THE POWER SUPPLY 6.4

The user must provide a power connection with relative socket near the machine installation
point. The user must also install an adequate electrical circuit breaker upstream from the socket
as well as efficacious overload/
indirect contact safety devices. Connection is effected via the safety plug (16A, in compliance
with European standards) at the end of the power lead: this must be inserted in the mains
socket.
When connecting check:
• that mains voltage and frequency are as indicated on the identification plate (incorrect power
supply voltage may damage the machine).
• that the mains supply has a proper, efficient earth connection.

It is forbidden to tamper with the power lead and its plug. It is forbidden to tamper
with the power lead or the attached plug. To replace the lead or plug in the event
of damage and/or wear, always contact an Authorised Servicing Centre.
A proper earth connection is compulsory. Should it temporarily be
necessary to use an extension lead the latter must comply with the
standards in force in the country of use.

THE PREPARATION OF PERFECT WORKING MODELS 6.5

The method used in preparing the mount of the working model is of vital importance when
choosing the type of diamond cutter and workpiece support for the TALETE saw.
The materials normally used to make dental arches are as follows:
• plasters
• epoxy resins;
• polyurethane resins.

The mount may be made using the following methods:

• the extractable element-pin method(with a plaster or resin mount);
• special methods for the manufacture of plexiglass mounts
(e.g. the SATOPINS SYSTEM);
• positioning boxes systems (e.g. MODELTRAY, TRICODENT, ACCUTRAC).

If the pin system and a plaster mount are used, then check to ensure that the surface the model
is placed on is level, even and bump-free.

TALETE 25 of 52
MAINTENANCE AND USE MANUAL

6.5.1 The choice of workpiece support and diamond cutter

The choice of a suitable workpiece support and the right diameter of diamond cutter depends
on the chosen method of model manufacture.

Depending on the piece of work to be sawn, the operator may decide to use a 0.3mm diameter
cutter (which gives a wider cut and is easier to use) or a 0.27 mm diameter cutter (which gives
a narrower cut and is more difficult to use).

The Standard Support is used for the separation of segments made from plaster, epoxy or
polyurethane resin, and plaster or plexiglass mounts. It may be used with 63 mm. diameter
diamond cutters, and with 75 mm. circular diamond cutters.

The Special Support 1 is used for the separation of segments made from plaster, epoxy or
polyurethane resin used with the MODELTRAY or TRICODENT systems. It may only be used
with 75 mm. diameter diamond cutters.

The Special Support 2 is used for the separation of segments made from plaster, epoxy or
polyurethane resin used with the ACCUTRAC system. It may only be used with 75 mm.
diameter diamond cutters.

PURPOSE OF THE MACHINE / IMPROPER AND FORBIDDEN USE 6.8

The TALETE saw is designed to cut working models to give the parallel separation of
extractable segments.
The TALETE saw is only designed to cut using the special workpiece support, and is not
designed to cut metal, elastic or malleable materials.

Using the machine for any purpose other than that described in section 6.8
(Purpose of the Machine) shall be considered improper and thus forbidden.

The saw may only be used with the special workpiece support, and may not be
used to cut materials other than dental plasters or resins: any other use may
cause damage to the cutter, to the bearings or to the drive shaft.

The TALETE saw is not designed to cut freehand or to be used without its
protective guard: failure to observe this rule could lead to serious personal
injury (serious cuts or amputation of the upper limbs, injuries to the eyes,
possible loss of sight, and so on).
The TALETE saw must under no circumstances be used to cut freehand or
without using the protective guard, the special workpiece support, or to cut
materials other than those specifically designed for dental purposes.

The machine must under no circumstances be used by more than one operator
at a time, so as to avoid any damage to the machine itself or any serious injury
to the persons concerned.

Improper use renders the Warranty null and void and Zhermack S.p.A. shall not
be liable for any damages to objects, workers or third parties.

The main reasons for which the Warranty may be rendered null and void are given in section
2.2 and in the "Warranty Certificate" enclosed with this Handbook.

CHAPTER 7: USING THE MACHINE

7.1 WARNING

The machine must not be used with any of its parts disassembled: before using
the equipment make sure that all its components are properly in place.

To ensure that work is done in absolute safety always make sure that you
follow the described procedures with caution.

To provide greater clarity the numbers given in the diagrams in the following
paragraphs correspond exactly to the numbering in Chapter 3 in the
"Machine Description" section.

7.2 SAFETY SYSTEMS

To ensure maximum working reliability, Zhermack S.p.A. effects strict quality controls on all
machine materials and components; the machine is fully tested prior to delivery.
Only the very best materials are used: Zhermack S.p.A. effects constant quality controls on all
materials (on taking delivery, during storage and during final use in the production plant) so as
to guarantee the customer absence of damage, deterioration and/or malfunctions.
The TALETE saw was designed in accordance with the safety provisions in EEC DIRECTIVE
89/392.
The machine is fitted with the following safety systems, specially designed to guarantee its
long-term safety and reliability:
• twin controls for cutting operations;
• protective shields;
• control micro-switch for the correct positioning of the mobile protective guard;
• monitoring circuit that checks the correct working of the electromagnet.

Under no circumstances should the operator change the settings of any of the
said safety devices.

Before starting the machine, check to see that the front and side guards are not dama-
ged in any way, and ensure that the above-mentioned safety devices work properly. The ope-
ning of the front guard or the release of one of the two control buttons must bring the machine
to an immediate halt.

Even if only one of the said monitoring and safety mechanisms fails to work
properly, you must immediately contact the Authorised Service Centre.

30 of 52 TALETE
MAINTENANCE AND USE MANUAL

In order to avoid any danger from the incorrect functioning of the safety
devices, you are asked to:
• contact your Authorised Service Centre on a periodical basis for a control of
the above-mentioned safety devices and for the replacement (every two years)
of the machine’s control buttons;
• avoid using the machine without the special workpiece support;
• ensure that the machine is never used by more than one operator at a time.

In order that the operator may freely move the workpiece support, which has
certain protruding parts, the external guards do not completely enclose the
working area of the diamond circular cutter: they therefore do not totally
eliminate the risk if contact with the cutter itself. The resulting danger is clearly
marked by a special label attached to the side of the machine itself (see
sub-section 3.6.1).

TESTING FOR THE CORRECT POSITIONING OF THE CUTTER 7.3

Before using the TALETE saw to cut working models, you must carry out
certain tests designed to ensure that the cutter is correctly positioned (see
sub-section 6.6).

Fig. 9 : After having correctly assembled the

machine (see Chapter 6), lower the protective guard 1
(10), and then press the magnetic chuck button (1). 10

Figure 10

TALETE 31 of 52
MAINTENANCE AND USE MANUAL

FIRST TEST: Looking at the machine front on, the revolving cutter must appear
as a single vertical segment with no sideways oscillation at all.
If the thickness of the cutter seems to increase as the revs increase, this shows
that the cutter has been incorrectly mounted.
At this point, switch off the motor, disconnect the power cable, and proceed to
care fully reposition the cutter (see Chapter 6).

SECOND TEST: Looking at the machine from the side, the revolving cutter must
appear as a perfect circle.
If the cutter appears to become elliptical as the revs increase, this shows that
the cutter has been incorrectly mounted.
At this point, switch off the motor, disconnect the power cable, and proceed to
care fully reposition the cutter (see Chapter 6).

7.4 THE SEPARATION OF THE MODELS

Having correctly prepared the models (see sub-section 6.5) and correctly carried out all those
instructions given so far, proceed as follows:

you can proceed with the final cut, accompanying the
return lever (6) with your right hand until you obtain
the depth of cut you want.

Figure 20

If excessive pressure is placed on the lever during cutting, or the cut is

performed too quickly, or you fail to wait for the cutter to reach maximum revs,
this may cause the cutter or the model (X) to break.

buttons (1) and (7).
Do not release buttons (1) or (7) during 1
cutting, as the abrupt stopping of the
cutter inside the model (X) may break
the cutter or the model.

Figure 21

Under no circumstances open the front protective guard (10) before the cutter
has come to a complete standstill.

When the cutter has come to a complete halt, the front protective guard may then be raised.
If you wish to perform a further cutting operation, clean the TALETE saw thoroughly (see
Chapter 8) and then repeat all operations starting from the centring of the model.
If, on the other hand, you have finished cutting operations for the day, turn off the main switch
(4) and disconnect the plug (5) from the power supply, thus ensuring that the cutter (9) may not
be accidentally turned on.

RESIDUAL RISK 7.5

Residual risk is:

• a danger that cannot be completely eliminated through design and application of safety
devices.
• a potential danger which cannot be highlighted.
An emergency situation that could arise as a result of the malfunctioning of the electronic
monitoring system that regulates the safety system, is the sudden starting of the cutter at
maximum revs with the protective guard raised. Should this happen, immediately turn off the
machine using the main switch, taking the utmost care so as to avoid any injury to limbs or
sight.
Moreover, if all the test procedures designed to ensure the correct positioning of the cutter have
not been carried out (see sub-section 7.3), this could lead to another emergency situation,
involving the sudden movement and/or consequent falling of the cutter out of its housing,
causing cuts to, and/or the amputation of, the upper limbs and/or injuries to the eyes.

To prevent accidents always observe the instructions in this handbook. Should

you have any doubts at all please contact the Manufacturer or your Authorised
Servicing Centre.
The above-mentioned dangers are indicated by special labels attached to the machine, as
described in sub-section 3.6.1.

CHAPTER 8: MAINTENANCE

8.1 CLEANING

The machine exterior can normally be kept clean just by wiping it with a dry cloth. If necessary,
wet the cloth just a little water or use a non-degreasing detergent.
The operator must ensure that the machine is kept clean and free from any foreign bodies such
as dirt, water, non-conducting liquids etc.
The machine must be cleaned at the end of every work session to remove all residues.
Cleaning must be done with the machine at standstill and positioned in a stable manner.

Before cleaning the machine exterior always turn the main switch to OFF. It is
strictly forbidden to clean the machine while it is connected to the mains power
supply.
Never use inflammable, corrosive, alkaline or toxic liquids when cleaning the
machine.

Eye goggles and a face mask must be worn when using compressed air for
cleaning purposes. Do not allow any persons near the equipment as they could
be hit by flying dust.

8.2 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

Once the machine has been cleaned (see section 8.1) the operator must check for worn,
damaged or loose parts. If any such anomalies are discovered contact your Authorised
Servicing Centre.

Should any of the above anomalies be discovered it is strictly forbidden to

restart the machine before such faults have been set right.

More precisely, should the operator note any defects or problems of any kind whatsoever he/she
must place a warning sign on the machine indicating that maintenance work is in progress and
that using the machine is forbidden (EC-compliant signs can be purchased from the relevant
suppliers).

Routine maintenance, cleaning and proper machine use are essential factors in guaranteeing
long-lasting machine performance and safety.

Never use a naked flame to see what you are doing during checks or
maintenance operations.

36 of 52 TALETE
MAINTENANCE AND USE MANUAL

Machine safety devices/guards must never be removed except for repair and
maintenance purposes.
Such items must be replaced as soon as the situation which led to their removal
no longer exists and in any case before the machine is used again.

Before performing any maintenance operations, the maintenance engineer must ensure that
the machine is in a stationary position and that it cannot be restarted without his consent.
This is the only way of ensuring that that the machine does not suddenly start up while
personnel are in a potentially dangerous position. The maintenance engineer must be aware of
the exact working and movement of every part of the machine. Should he have any doubts
regarding this, then he must read Chapters 6 and 7 of the present manual, as well as the
plates and warning notices to be found on the machine itself (see sub-section 3.6.1).

For all maintenance and lubrication operations, closely follow the

instructions given in the present manual; in case of doubt, contact the
Manufacturer or the Authorised Service Centre.

Cleaning the dust box 8.2.1

The use of dental plaster, epoxy resins or polyurethane resins means that the dust box must
be cleaned and the filter replaced after every 20 hours of working.
Failure to clean the dust box will reduce the efficiency of the built-in aspirator, and eventually
lead to it becoming totally incapable of sucking up the dust produced during cutting.

Before cleaning the dust box, turn off the Main Switch (4) and disconnect the machine from the
power supply, and then proceed as follows:

Fig. 22 : To remove the dust box (14) turn the top 15

and bottom locking screws (13) in an anti-clockwise
direction, then pull the box (14) out towards the
outside of the rear cover. Then remove the filter bag
(15).

14

13
Figure 22

As far as the disposal of the residue from cutting operations contained in

the dust filter bag (15) is concerned, you must comply with the existing legal
requirements as described on the packaging of the materials themselves.
You must, in any case, comply with the relevant EEC directives and/or
existing laws in the user country.

TALETE 37 of 52
MAINTENANCE AND USE MANUAL

If you do not have a replacement filter bag, you can wash the old bag in water and put it back
after it has dried out thoroughly.
Nevertheless, you are strongly advised to use the dust filter bag just once,
as a washed bag in fact halves the maintenance period to just 10 working
hours.
It is a good idea to ensure that the filter box housing and the aspirator fan do not contain any
remaining dust: if they do, remove it using a vacuum cleaner.
When you have replaced the filter bag, reposition the box in its housing and clamp it down by
turning the top and bottom screws (13) in a clockwise direction.

8.2.2 Cleaning the magnetic chuck

During cutting operations, dust may settle on the magnetic chuck (3): this must be removed
using a dry cloth.
Do not use water, liquid detergents or solvents to clean the magnetic chuck;
should it prove absolutely necessary to use a liquid detergent to clean the
chuck, then after it has been cleaned and has thoroughly dried, pass a cloth
soaked in Vaseline over the chuck so as to insulate the chuck itself from any
damp and water vapour present in the room.
The magnetic chuck may be subject to oxidation (rust). The oxides that form can reduce the
clamping force of the chuck, thus compromising the safety and precision of working.
These oxides may be removed by lightly sanding the chuck using 000 sepia paper, and then
passing a cloth soaked in Vaseline over the surface.

8.2.3 Replacing the diamond cutter

Should the diamond cutter break or get damaged, it must be taken out and replaced.
Instructions of how to perform this operation are given in the relevant chapter of the present
manual. The main reasons for damage to the cutter are as follows:
• wear;
• incorrect mounting;
• wrong choice of workpiece / workpiece support / diamond cutter;
• incorrect clamping of the model;
• wrong material used to make the model to be cut;
• cutting in the proximity of a brass or steel segment pin.
The cutter may cause injuries (such as cuts and abrasions) if absent-mindedly
bumped into. All operators and maintenance staff are advised to take the
utmost care when working on or near the machine, and should always wear
protective gloves when doing so.

8.3 UNSCHEDULED MAINTENANCE

Unscheduled maintenance includes repair of any accidental breakage and replacement of worn
or malfunctioning parts.

38 of 52 TALETE
MAINTENANCE AND USE MANUAL

All electrical and mechanical work must only be carried out by an authorised
Zhermack S.p.A. maintenance technician.

Modifications which alter the machine characteristics from a safety and risk
prevention viewpoint may only be made by the Manufacturer who shall then
issue a certificate stating that the machine conforms to safety standards.
Therefore any modification or maintenance tasks not actually described in
this manual are to be considered forbidden. If the machine is modified, tam-
pered with or repaired by unauthorised personnel or non-original spare parts
are used the manufacturer is relieved of all responsibility.
If a maintenance task is required but is not described in this manual you
must contact an Authorised Servicing Centre.

Replacement of the switches 8.3.1

The switches mounted on the machine are guaranteed for a period of 2 (two) years. At the end
of this period, or before so should they prove faulty, the said switches must be replaced:
to do so you must contact the Authorised Service Centre, who will see to their replacement and
issue a certificate certifying their replacement.

The switches must not be replaced in any other way than that described in the
present manual, and neither must other types of switch, unauthorised by the
machine manufacturer, be used when doing so.

RESTARTING AFTER A LONG PERIOD OF INACTIVITY 8.4

Should the machine need to be restarted after a particularly long period of inactivity proceed as
described in Chapter 6 (First-time Use).
If there are any faults or malfunctions proceed as described in Chapter 9 (Troubleshooting).
If the problem persists or is not covered by the information in this chapter contact your
Authorised Servicing Centre immediately.
