It was while he was at the College that his interest in bands'agose. composition professor, Philip Cannon, had formed a symphoni¢'i first-year wind players and encouraged his pupils to write-for’itAn interest in brass bands followed and Philip Sparke formed a band from. amongst fellow students, writing several works for them. In. 1975 he was awarded frst prize in a competition organiséd by the Schools Band Association of the overture ‘The Prizewinners’ and at about the same time wrote ‘Concert Prelude’ which was his first work to be pi A growing interest in his music lead to several commissions, including one for the test-piece for the Centennial Brass Band Championship in New Zealand - ‘The Land of the Long White Cloud’. : iS. the BBC and various band ch National Championship in. Also “The Year of the Dragon’, commissioned in 1984 by the Cory Band, was set fof the European Championship in Cardiff 1986 also saw commissions from Desford, Foden and the Cambridge Bands as well as the Salford College of Technology.1n 1987 he was asked to write the Championship Finals test-piece for rhe prestigious ‘Nationals’ at the Royal Albert Hall (‘Harmony Music’) as wellias,*Endeavour’ for the 1988 ‘World Championship’ held is Brisbane as part of the Australian Bicentennial Festival of Bands. He was appointed ser-in-Residence at Salford College of Technology for 1990-92. His coriducting arid:adjudicating activities have taken him to Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Canvey Island, Switzerland, New Zealand, Austgilia anid the USA. He is Music Editor for Studio Music Company, London and condets the Hillingdon Brass Band.
