His arrangements for the 1937 Coronation were used again, with additions, in 1953. He wrote several Concert Band pieces for the USA, including his William Byrd Sutte and Festal March. During the 1960s he became fascinated with wind instruments and he wrote many works for Concert Band, ‘These included. for Euphonium and Concert Band and Ceremofiial Music. In 1975 Alexandra Palace (Ally Pally) w8'ommissioned to mark the centenary of the famous building and was first played’in May 1975. In 1978 he was commissioned by Arthur Doyis certo for'Symphonic Band, Fantasy for another work and this resulted in his Symphony AD 78, which was prémiigred in Birmingham in December 1978. Even in his 80s Gordon Jacob contittued writing for orchestra and Concert Band. ith the Smoothing Iron and Blow the Man Down were followed by his last major work, Goncerto for Timpani and Wind Band, which was first performed after his déath inJune 1984. His vwo fantasies, Dashing Away CONCERTO FOR TIMPANI AND BAND Gordon Jacob wrote his "Concerto for Timpani" in 1984 and it was,to be the last major work that he wrote before he died. It was written for:a ‘professional wind group in Konstanz (West Germany) and the first performance was given there in June 1984 with the soloist Klaus Huber (to whom it is dedicated) gonducted by Douglas Bostock. S In the first movement, a broad theme is announced by the’ timpani themsetves based on a rising succession of thirds, and immediately“échi the full wind band. Aftcr a bridge, when the material is cmbroidered by woodwinds, the theme is presented in an inverted,anthyariedform by the soloist before being developed. Unlike a Classical development in which tonality provides the tension, the nature of the timpani means that the development is rhythmic rather than tonal.
