DR Norhan PDF Lecture 3 Signal Transduction For Students Elalamein 2021-22
The human body is composed of billions of cells, each with a distinct function.
The cells within the body are surrounded by a plasma membrane that separates the
intracellular contents from the extracellular environment.
1. Selective transport of molecules into and out of the cell. A function carried out by
membrane transport proteins.
2. Cell recognition through the use of cell surface antigens.
3. Cell communication through neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and through
signal transduction pathways.
4. Tissue organization, such as temporary and permanent cell junctions, and
interaction with the extracellular matrix, with the use of a variety of cell adhesion
molecules.
5. Membrane-dependent enzymatic activity.
6. Determination of cell shape by linkage of the cytoskeleton to the plasma membrane.

of cellular metabolism that serve as chemical messengers and provide cell-to-cell
communication.
Chemical and physical messengers interact with receptors located in the plasma
membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. Interaction of these messengers with receptors
initiates a cascade of signalling events that mediate the response to each stimulus.
2
Cell-to-cell communication is mediated by five basic mechanisms:

Receptors :
All signaling molecules bind to specific receptors that act as signal transducers,
thereby converting a ligand-receptor binding event into intracellular signals that affect
cellular function. Receptors can be divided into four basic classes on the basis of their
structure and mechanism of action:
