COCCIDIOSIS

Coccidiosis is a big problem. Recently we have seen more and more

farmers struggling and fighting coccidiosis, even in the laying sector.
There are different strains of this feared disease, all with their own
specific characteristics. Two things they have in common;
they always negatively influence results and they are hard to tackle.
The fight against coccidiosis starts with good hygiene and a proper
and thorough cleaning protocol. It is important to break the complex
development of the eggs, called “Oocytes”.

Oocytes are encapsulated and are therefore very difficult to

challenge. One Oocyte can live for years without a host,
which makes it a common problem on the farm.

The red mite

The red mite is a well know problem within the poultry industry. Warmth gives the red mite
the ideal conditions in which to breed, so numbers can proliferate extremely quickly.
They hide in crevices and joints of the poultry house during the day then emerge at night
to crawl up the bird’s legs, through the feathers and take a feed of blood from your birds.
The red mite life cycle from egg to adult mite is only between seven and ten days
depending on the environmental temperature.

How do you recognize an infection?

Mites mainly cause irritation and annoyance to chickens, making birds restless.
However, large numbers of mites can suck enough blood causing weakness,
dullness and reduced egg production. Their immune system will be weakened
and they will be more susceptible to other diseases.
