This poem entitled “Text” by Carol Ann Duffy, is all about the messages we

typed on our mobile devices. Nowadays, with the advancement of

technology in this generation, we are all focus in the online and virtual world.
We tend to have a social interaction through texting messages to form a
conversation with others. This isn't new to us, people across the world are
probably involved in this modern way of communication. And this makes it
clear that the persona also uses this kind of interconnection due to the
application of the first-person point of view in her poem. However, she’s not
happy with this quiet conversation between screens. She described it as a
broken chord, it shows that they are sending text messages back and forth on
which she can’t even imagine the feelings of the person who is sending those
messages to her because of their distance.

In terms of the structure of this poem, there is a direct utilization of language

and emphasis in regards with the thought she wanted to convey towards her
readers. It is a Sonnet which composes of 14 lines and divided into 7
couplets. This poem definitely has a rhyme but it’s not easy to figure out
because of its rhyme scheme of “BFCGDH”. The literary devices applied in
Carol Ann Duffy’s ‘Text’ are Simile, Metaphor, and Imagery. Simile was used
in this poem because of the first couplet on which she compared the mobile
into an injured bird using the word “like”. Moreover, metaphor was
employed in this due to the implementation of broken chord which means
text messages. She also uses imagery in 6th couplet by describing the hands
and stated its image is blurred to help the readers clearly visualize parts
through creating a strong picture. Indeed, these are all used to express her
thoughts more creative to her readers. The theme of the poem is the distance
of socialization through texting.

Therefore, I conclude that text messaging is just a mode of visual

communication and can’t deliver our feelings to a person. It just sends our
words but can’t express our emotions. It only refers to the habit of texting
which has become an inseparable part of our lives. Otherwise, it is
meaningless because of the sense of loneliness.
