3 Scientists Who Contributed to the Formulation of Cell Theory:

1. Robert Brown is a Botanist and a brilliant scientist during the early 1800s. He's focused in the
field of botany by studying palynology which is the study of living and fossilized plant pollen,
spores, microscopic plankton, and plant cells. At the time of Robert Brown conducting studies,
he was also interested in plant cells and as a botanist he knew that it took pollen grains in order
to create new plants. While watching the process of pollen grains fertilizing a plant, he noticed
that there were ovals inside the plant cells and the pollen was moving in and out of the ovals. He
realized that the ovals were of great importance to the cells and called them the nucleus of the
cell. Through this discovery, Robert studied briefly about it and till he was able to recognize that
the nucleus of the plant cells was necessary for fertilization and subsequent embryonic
development to occur. Brown published his research findings and gave speeches. His discovery
of the nucleus and its role helped to put together the cell theory.
1. Robert Remak (1815-1865) was a neurologist, a physiologist, and an embryologist. He was born
in Poznań, Poland, where he lived for 18 years before attending the University of Berlin to study
medicine. Life in his country is very hard at that time because it was occupied by Prussia and as a
Polish Jew he was rejected by everyone. But, that’s not going to stop him to study medicine.
After graduating, Remak accepted a position as assistant to Johannes Peter Müller. The
University of Berlin could not escape anti-Semitic pressures of the time, and Remak, a Polish
Jew, did not receive pay for his work in Müller's lab. According to legal provisions at that time, as
a Jew he was also banned from occupying the post of professor in areas under Prussian rule.
Working as a private physician to pay the bills, Remak briefly set out to study all about cells and
prove that cells originate from division. As a result, Remak substantiated the existence of the
cell membrane, while proving that at least some cells originated via division from prior cells.
Remak, felt that all cells originated by division, and theorized cell division caused the spread of
pathological tissue (like tumors).
