causes a glass ampule of acid to be crushed. The acid mixes
with a chemical compound and generates a flame which thus
ignites the mine’s charge. Upon exploding the Hawkins AT
Mine contains enough explosive power to blow a track off
most tanks.
Compact, lightweight and deadly, the Hawkins AT
Mine proved to be ideal for what it was designed for: quick and
easy anti-tank defense. One Hawkins AT Mine was standard
issue to every individual American and British paratrooper on
D-Day and was usually strapped to the calf for quick access.
As most paratroop units lacked substantial anti-tank support,
Hawkins AT Mines were put to get use in defending Allied
mission objectives behind German lines. One favorite tactic
was to attach several Hawkins AT Mines to a rope and then
pull the rope across a road in front of unsuspecting enemy
vehicles. Dubbed a “Daisy Chain” by paratroopers, this inge-
nious use of the Hawkins AT Mine resulted in many damaged
German vehicles!

History
The No. 75 Hawkins AT Mine is a lightweight anti-
tank mine employed by paratroopers and other elite Allied
forces. Unlike most mines which are buried under the earth,
the Hawkins’ small size allows it to be used exposed on top
of a road, field, etc. Though oddly classified as a grenade by
the British, the Hawkins is actually detonated by the pressure
of a vehicle. Interestingly, detonation occurs when pressure
