Fusing: impact (all ways)

History
The Gammon Bomb is essentially a “bean bag” filled
with plastic explosive that explodes on contact. Resembling
a wrapped gammon (hence its name), the bomb consists of a
cloth bag filled with plastic explosive and a fuse/cap on top.
Because it explodes on contact, a Gammon Bomb cannot be
placed. Yet, it is highly effective against vehicles and fixed
positions (such as buildings) as it does not bounce.
Gammon Bombs served a variety of destructive needs
for both American and British paratroopers and as such were
common issue. An interesting use of the Gammon Bomb was
in the creation of “mouse holes.” Paratroops would use Gam-
mons to blow holes between adjoining buildings thus allow-
ing them to move house to house without braving enemy fire
in the open!
