CULTURE SHOCK

Todd, an American was working for a MNC company in the United States. He was Vice President of a Sales team in Chicago. One day during his work, his boss called him in the cabin
and gave him the news that their entire process is being outsourced to India to save the costs of the firm. After hearing this Todd was a bit taken aback and he was shocked to hear this
news. Also, there was one more surprising element to this, he was supposed to go in India to train the future manager of the company. Todd was reluctant in the start to visit India but
then he agreed to travel to India.
As the cultures in the US as well as in India are completely different right from way of eating to way of talking, Todd was about to face cross-culture conflict. He landed at the Mumbai
airport and started his journey on the way to Gorakhpur. So, on his way from Mumbai airport to station, he was surrounded by cab drivers who were fighting with each other so that
they could provide service to Todd, then he finally took Rick, watched the streets of Mumbai, and reached station. As he was late for his train journey he had to run and catch the train
and then finally reached Gorakhpur station. Then he took cab to reach the guest house where on the streets he could see cows, buffaloes blocking the street, people peeing on the walls.
He got this feeling that how things are way different in India as compared to the US.
Once he reached the guest house, the owner of the house started asking him personal questions, served him too much food which he was unable to digest, then the restroom system was
also different to which had to get accustomed. He rested for a while and then went on his way to the office. The office in the US was a skyscraper whereas here in India it was just a
building with walls, then there was a cow in the back area of office. By seeing all of this, he was little irked as well as home sick, he wanted to finish the training as soon as possible and
wanted to move back to the US.
While providing training in the office, he noticed that the some of the vocabularies were different in India than in the US, so then he had to give training to his colleagues to use the
American word. While making his Indian colleagues aware of the US products, slangs, jargons he was reluctant to be aware of Indian culture. All of this was a huge cultural shock to
him. But then one day he went out and he saw that people were throwing colors and water balloons at him as well as on each other, then his colleague told him about the festival of Holi
and soon even Todd started playing along with colors. He had enjoyed every bit of it. He slowly started accepting Indian culture. When he went to office that day, he was concerned
about his teammates needs and provided them with the required solution, started accepting cows moving around in the back area of the office. Slowly he had started to bond with his
colleagues. He also started mingling with the neighbors around, was having lunch with them, started to know what kind of job they do.
So that’s the thing about cultural shock, there’s first excitement, then there is confusion, misunderstanding, anxiety which gradually changes to coping and adjusting with the new
environment. Todd also faced similar pattern and eventually he was able to accept the cultural change.
