Faculty: and Surveying
Course code: SBEC4643 Academic Session/Semester: 202021/2

Course name: Construction Plant & Temporary Works Pre/co requisite (course name Not applicable
and code, if applicable):
Credit hours: 3

Course synopsis The course provides a working knowledge on construction plant and temporary
structures. Topics will include an introduction to principles and techniques for selecting
and managing construction equipment. Review and evaluate the types of earthmoving
and other construction equipments, including the estimating and analysis of
production, ownership and operating costs. Study of temporary structures used to
support construction operations such as formwork, scaffolding systems, shoring
systems, cofferdam, underpinning, slurry walls and construction dewatering systems.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will develop a working
knowledge of common construction plant and equipment’s and their management
imperatives and techniques. They should understand different types of temporary
structures used to support construction and able to identify alternative solutions to the
temporary structures design.

Details on Innovative T&L practices:

No. Type Implementation
1. Active learning Conducted through in-class activities
2. Project-based learning Conducted through an assignment. Students in a group of 4 are given 1 project
that require them to prepare the method statement with sketches of a designated
temporary work element. The sketches would involve the use of 3D software such
as SketchUp and AutoCad.
