‫‪Introduction:‬‬
‫‪Value-based site management:‬‬
‫‪evolution, rationale, concepts and‬‬
‫‪definitions‬‬
• MANAGEMENT is often defined as an
administrative direction or as control of the
course of affairs by one’s own action.
• Heritage site management is one way to control
elements that make up the physical and social
environment of a site, its physical condition, land
use, human visitors, interpretation, etc.
• Management may be aimed at preservation, or if
necessary, at minimizing damage or destruction,
or at presentation of the site to the public.

MANAGEMENT PLANS
A Heritage Management
Plan isn’t…
• A conservation plan
• An architectural restoration plan
• A maintenance plan
• A business plan
• A visitor management plan
• A tourism development plan
It is…
• A plan that is developed to help guide decision-
making and interventions on a heritage site
MANAGEMENT PLANS
1. Preparation (including
identifying the actors /
stakeholders)
2. Data gathering
3. analysis and synthesis
4. Development of
responses
5. Implementation

BASIC STEPS OF THE PLANNING PROCESS

• Provides a structure for
analysis of complex processes
• Ensures that interventions are
deliberately and thoughtfully
designed to protect the
heritage values
• Provides guiding principles for
coordination of activities /
responsibilities on the site
• Provides a framework to make
informed decisions
• Helps to rationalize existing
resources
