n Aug. 2, the Klamath Falls, Ore., police department responded to a
911 call of a shooting outside of a convenience store. Upon arrival,
they found a 29-year-old man shot in the leg and shoulder. Witnesses
said the wounded man had been shooting at a vehicle his girlfriend was driving.
A legally armed citizen witnessed this and intervened, shooting the assailant
twice and instantly stopping the rampage. The wounded man then tried to hide
his weapon, which was nonetheless recovered by detectives at the scene. The
woman was not injured in the incident, though her vehicle was struck multiple
times. After being released from a nearby medical center, the attacker was
charged with attempted murder, felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful use
of a weapon and reckless endangering. (klamathfallsnews.org, Klamath Falls,

Giving Credit Where It’s Due

The “Opening Shot” titled “Marines & Model 70s In
Vietnam” (September 2020, p. 26) was of a young Marine,
who happens to be a personal friend of mine. I called him
to tell him his picture was in the magazine. You might
imagine how surprised I was to see his picture, after all
the issues of the Rifleman I have read, being a longtime
Life and Endowment member and 86 years old.
My disappointment was that his name was not pub-
lished. The same photo appeared in the August 2008 issue, and it was a USMC
photo taken by Sgt. Bill Wier. I have a personally autographed copy of it
dated Oct. 1, 2008, and as a practicing rifleman, I am very proud to have it.
That young Marine in Vietnam is Cpl. Ron Szpond. Let’s give him the credit he
deserves as a sniper in Vietnam when stories are told about it.
Ed Denton, Massachusetts

The Humble Model 94

I really enjoyed Editorial Director John Zent’s sidebar “A Brief History Of
Savage Shotguns 1920-2020” (October 2020, p. 49). I realize space was tight
and it was “brief,” but I was surprised that there was no mention of the top-
selling Savage/Stevens shotgun of all time—the Model 94 single-shot. Savage/
Stevens sold a gazillion of these things under their own names, as well as store
brands. These workhorse shotguns were the first “real” guns for many thousands
of kids throughout rural America.
I still have the 20-ga. Model 94C that I got when I was 12 in the summer of

Amend2 6.5 Grendel 10 Round Magazine

O
riginally developed by Alexander Arms, the 6.5 mm Grendel chambering sig-
nificantly extends the range of the AR-15 while also making it a much more
capable platform for the hunting of large game, and Amend2 has now devel-
oped the first ever polymer, 10-round detachable magazine designed specifically
around this cartridge. Roughly the same length as a standard .223 Rem. 20-rounder,
the 6.5 Grendel 10 Round Magazine stagger stacks the rounds at the bottom of
the box but then transitions the cartridges to feed only from the right side of the
magazine thanks to a left-side extension near the feed lips. Available in black,
gray, flat dark earth and olive drab green, the sturdy 3.7-oz. magazines feature
an anti-tilt, self-lubricating follower and a stainless steel spring. Price: $18.

The timing of Waypoint’s release precluded my hunting

carry it on pre-season scouting trips across private wooded

to the shoulder effortlessly thanks mostly to the stock’s cleanly
blended contours and the rifle’s reasonable overall weight. I
also wrung out the Waypoint at Peacemaker National Training
Center’s Independence range (peacemakernational.com),
which offers both paper and steel targets at distances from 100
to 300 yds. Further, I enlisted the aid of Rifleman Associate

The M&P was Smith & Wesson’s “K-frame Military & Police”

more than an aesthetic purpose; it
alerts the shooter that the magazine is

A nine-round extended magazine

the gun’s 24" barrel comes standard.
If the 940 JM Pro, like all extended
magazine shotguns, has one weak
link, this is it. You see, a nine-round
magazine requires a thin spring
approximately 34" long. Springs
eventually weaken with use; so, if the
gun does start to misfeed after many
rounds, suspect this magazine spring
first. On a more positive note, the
magazine tube does not utilize clamps
to hold it to the barrel, a feature
that typically makes such guns more
accurate with slugs, as does the front

NRAWomen.com Field Notes

After shooting the 940 JM Pro pro-
fusely, I’ve developed a few opinions.
First, it’s likely the best full-length
semi-automatic shotgun you can buy
for around $1,000, and certainly for its
$900 real-world price. It comes up to
my eye naturally; instantly I hit flying
targets without conscious thought,
indicating that it shoots where I look.
I like it almost as well on the skeet
field as I do on the 3 Gun range. It’s

allows this gun to hold 11 rounds in
total. All its controls are wonderful,
and it patterned uniformly (see the
accompanying table on p. 56). What
was most striking however, was this
gun’s surprising recoil-mitigating prop-
erties, especially when you note its
overall weight of only 7 lbs., 7 ozs.—
which is insane knowing it comes with
a nine-round magazine tube. Most
competitive shotguns in this category
weigh at least a pound more, and so
I was afraid the 940’s recoil would be
considerable. But because there is no
magic to recoil mitigation, I can only
account it to three things: 1. The gun’s
gas system and return springs are effi-
cient at soaking up recoil. 2. The gun
fit me well. 3. Its soft rubber, collaps-
ing buttpad works well.
I could not get the gun to jam,
including during a break-in period. It

the shooters in our household are hunt-

So, does the 6 mm Creedmoor possess
enough merit for use in hunting that
we should allow it to take up perma-

Let’s find out.

The gas-operated Model 940 uses a short-stroke system, and its gas piston surrounds the
magazine tube. On the JM Pro, there is a perforated cylinder between the piston and pusher
assembly. Magazine capacity with the extended tube is nine 2¾" shotshells. Instead of a
brass bead, the top rib wears a Hi-Viz triangular front sight. The JM Pro comes standard
with three extended Briley choke tubes: cylinder, improved cylinder and modified.
