SAQ –

Define cultural norms and the human behavior –

 enculturation (acquisition of cultural characteristics by a person)
 human behavior (understanding maintenance of traditions, importance of authority,
role of a person in a community)

Study – Greenfield (2006)

 Longitudinal study to understand enculturation in Mayan mothers
 Naturalistic observations of families
 Mothers teaching daughters how to weave
 Mothers do not directly teach their daughters, but observe daughters’ progress
 High adult-child interactions maintained traditions
 Shows importance of listening to and respecting authority
 Contributing to the family
 Role of women in Mayan culture – weaving associated with marriageability

Conclusion – Enculturation impacts human behavior

ERQ –
Explanation of cultural dimension and the human behavior –
 list of cultural dimensions; cultural dimension (individualism vs collectivism)
 explanation of the cultural dimension (the degree to which people are inculcated
into a social group and are able to describe and display their personal characteristics)
 mention the differences between individualism and collectivism (portrayal of
uniqueness vs existing as a part of the social group, etc)
 human behavior (conformity or how willing people were to conform to their social
groups)

Study – Berry (1967)

 Three cultures were taken (Tenme, Inuit, Scots), from each group, three sets of
people were taken.
 The three sets were: people who were still tradition, people who were transitioning
to a Western culture, people who were fully part of the Western culture.
 Each individual was brought into a room and shown some cards with lines on them.
They were asked to tell the researchers which of the lines were longest.
 They were then told that others from the culture said another line was longest.
 Temne had higher rate of conformity than Scots, Inuit had lower rate of conformity
than Scots.
 No difference within the groups.

Evaluation –
 Are the findings relevant today?
 Ecological validity – doesn’t explain how this would suffice in the real-world, where
there may be consequences for decision.
 Control condition – allows for clearer definition and establishment of cause-and-
effect.
 Because lab experiment – highly replicable which leads to high reliability
 Ecological fallacy – how the conformity relates to the culture.
