INTRODUCTION

A mobile phone is a device that can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link
whilst moving around a wide geographic area. It does so by connecting to a cellular network
provide by a mobile phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network.

In the island of Polillo, Quezon, many people specially teenagers has a mobile phone. Mobile
phone are very important tools of communicating in teenagers and also a form of entertainment.
Teenagers see their phone as the essential ingredient for maintaining a healthy social life.

A survey by Harris Interactive (2015) found that nearly half (47%) of teenagers thought their
social life would end or be significantly diminished if they did not have a mobile phone. 57% of
teenagers credited their mobile phone with improving their life.

Too much usage of mobile phone can affect the health of the user because it gives radiation that
can cause major problems in their health if they are always expose to it.

In spite of some knowledge on unfavourable heath of the user because it gives radiation that can
cause major problems in their health if they are always expose to it.

In april 2000, an independent expert group in UK has issued a report on Mobile phone effects on
health based on rigorous assessment of research in this area and show no evidence of the impact
of mobile phones to human health. Since then a number of studies has been accomplished.

According to Dr. Abdullah AIOrainy the use of mobile phones always accompanied by the
issue of health implication for human. Previous research studies show no evidence of the impact
of mobile phones to human health. New studies suggest that mobile radiation might double the
risk of developing cancer on the side of the head used, increase brain activity, can cause damage
to nerves around ears and, more importantly, damages the BBB. Also new research shows that
biological effects are possible without any warming of tissues which impose the current radiation
exposure levels.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies regarding the topic on the
Effect of Increased Usage of Mobile Phone on the Health of Grade 11 Students at Mt. Carmel
School of Polillo POlillo, Quezon S.Y. 2018-2019.

Uses of Mobile Phones

According to Erin Schreiner (2017), Along with their books and school supplies, many students
make their daily trip to school with their trusty mobile phone. These pocket-sized tools can do
anything from make a standard phone call to surf the web. The presence of cell phones presents a
host of option and challenges fo today’s students. Mobile phones can be a helpful academic tool
or a hurtful academic disruption and can affect the student’s health depending upon the attitude
and use pattern of the student owner.

Effects of radiation cause by mobile phones

Mobile phones have become a widespread phenomenon in the present time. These pocket-sized
tools are no less than minicomputer. They can do anything-from a standard phone call to surf the
internet. Not just the adults, this technology is affecting teenagers as well, said Arshi (2017).
Todays teenagers are growing up in a radio-frequency environment that never existed in human
history before. The radiation emitted by mobile phone masts can have adverse effects on
teenagers.

In the recent Years, there has been a lot of speculation about the impact of cell phone radiation
on our body. A study by The Journal of the American Medical Association (2013) stirred the
debate when it investigated the repercussion the mobile phones could have on the brain activity.

According to Scribd (2017), Electromagnetic waves alter electric activity of the brain and cause
disturbance in sleep; cause difficultly in concentration, fatigue, and headache; and increase
reaction time in a time-dependent manner. They increase the resting blood pressure and reduce
the production of melatonin. They are also implicated in DNA strand breaks. Mobile phones
damage key brain cells and could trigger the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers
have found that radiation mobile phone handsets damages areas of the brain associated with
learning, memory and movement. Also found that people who used cell phones were two and a
half time more likely to have a temporal brain tumor on the side of the head were they held their
phone. In case of tumors of the auditory nerve, which connects the ears to the brain, the risk
increased to more than three times foe mobile phone users.

Radiofrequency Exposure Cause by Mobile Phones

While cell phones provide an efficient and easy way to communicate with friends, family, and
co-workers, excessive use can take a toll on your health, according to Lizette Borreli (2013).
Mobile phones use transmitting radio waves through a series of base stations where radio
frequency waves are electromagnetic fields that cannot break chemical bonds or cause ionization
in the human body, says the Worlds Healthy Organization (WHO) (2014). Although cell phones
are considered to be low powered radio frequency transmitters, your handset transmits power
when it is on, and therefore it is important to increase your distance from the handset to reduce
radio frequency exposure.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCCC) (2012) suggests cell phones users to keep a
minimum distance of 20 centimeters from their handset to significantly reduce radiation
exposure. Adults and specially children can suffer a long-term effects of radiation waves on the
brain. “Young children particularly need to be careful,” Dr. Devra Davis, director for
environmental oncology at the University of Pittsburgh, told CNN.com (2012).”We do not have
enough information nor do we have enough time to be sure that cell phones are safe, and there’s
reason for concern that they may be harmful,”she said. The University of Pittsburgh also warned
its faculty and stuff to limit their cell phone use due to the possible cancer risks.

According to Zahid Naeem (2014), mobile phones emit radio frequency energy, a form of non-
ionizing electromagnetic radiation, which can be absorbed by tissues close to the phone. The
amount of radio frequency energy a mobile phone user is exposed depend on my factors as the
technology of the phone, the distance between the phone and the user, the extent and type of
mobile phone use and the user’s distance from the cell phones tower.

In a study conducted at the state of Victoria (2017), Mobile phones communicate with base
stations using radio frequency (RF) radiation. If RF radiation is high enough, it has a ‘thermal’
effect, which means it raises body temperature. There are concerns that the low levels of RF
radiation emitted by mobile phones could cause health problems such as or brain tumors,
Intensive international research has found no conclusive or convincing evidence that mobile
phones are damaging to health in the short or long term. However, in May 2012, the World
Health Organization (WHO) classified RF radiation as ‘possibly carcinogenic for human, based
on an increased risk for gliona, a type of brain cancer’.

Mobile Phone Can Cause Stress to a Person

The high frequency of cell phone use can have negative effects on our stress level. The constant
ringing, vibrating alerts, and reminders can put a cell phone user on edge. In a study conducted at
the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (2012), researchers examined if there is a direct link
between the psychosocial aspect of cell phone use and mental health symptoms in young adults.
The participants of the study included 20 to 24 years olds who responded to a questionnaire, in
addition to a one year follow up. Researchers found high mobile phone use was associated with
stress and sleep disturbances for women, whereas high mobile phone use was associated with
sleep disturbances and symptoms of depression in men. Overall, excessive cell phone use can be
a risk factor mental health issues in young adults.

Harmful Germs on Mobile Phone

The incessant touching of your phone can harbour germs on your handset. The greasy, oily
residue you may see on your cell phone after a days use can contain more disease-prone germs
than those found on a toilet seat. In a study conducted at the London School of Hygiene &
Tropical Medicine and Queen Mary, University of London (2017), researcher sampled 390 cell
phones and hand to measure for levels of bacteria. The results of the showed that 92 percent of
the cell phones sampled had bacteria on them -82 percent of hands had bacteria and 16 percent of
cell phones and hands had E. Coli. Fecal matter can easily be transferred by cell phones from one
person to another.

According to Abigail Abrams (2017), Most people don’t give a second thought to using their cell
phone everywhere, from their morning commute to the dinner table to the doctor’s office. But
research shows that cell phones are far dirtier than most people think, and the more germs they
collect, the more germs you touch.

Human skin is naturally covered in microbes that don’t usually have any negative health
consequences, and that natural bacteria, plus the oils on your hands, get passed on to your phone
every time you check a text or send an email. It follows that most of the organisms found on
phones are not pathogens that will make you sick, Abrams says.

Reasearchers have discovered there are more bacteria on the average mobile than you will find in
a toilet. In test there was up to 10 times the amount of bugs which can cause nausea and stomach
problems than were present in a lavatory according to Daniel Bates (2012).

Experts said the reason is that phones is often passed between people which spreads the germ
around but they are never cleaned which means the disease keep on building up. Charles Gerba
(2012) a micro biologist at the university of of Arizona, said during his ongoing experiments he
has found that bugs get onto a phone because it is so close to our hands and mouths. When
somebody lets a friend or a stranger use their mobile their bacteria easily gets onto the device
too.

Mobile Phone and Body Pain

Cell phones require constant use of your hands, especially when sending text message and e-
mails. Responding to messages at rapid speed can cause pain and inflammation of your joints.
Back pain is also common with increased cell phone use, especially if you hold the phone
between your neck and shoulders as you multi task. “ Long period of cell phone use cause you
to arch your neck and hold your body in a strange posture.
