BENEFITS AND BENEFICIARIES OF RESEARCH

Research has only one main objective and that is the upliftment of the quality of
life. Thus, you have to be convinced that this study of yours would lead to the ultimate goal
of improving people’s lives, not just to comply with a requirement.

To be able to do this, you may identify the groups who would eventually benefit
from your study, starting from the most direct beneficiaries to the ones who would be
indirectly benefited by it. The study on the job satisfaction and job performance would
probably directly benefit the employees, their clients, the HR Managers and indirectly, the
Department of Labor and Employment, the community, the society as a whole.

After identifying the beneficiaries of the study, discuss the specific benefit that they
would get from it: that is, by discussing how the study would help in solving existing
problems of these identified groups leading towards an upliftment of their situation.

In other formats of research, this section is called “Significance of the Study”.

How to Write “Benefits and Beneficiaries/Significance of

the Study”
STEP ONE

Identify the beneficiary or beneficiaries.

STEP TWO

Describe the “benefit or benefits” that will be derived from the research or study.

If you have few beneficiaries, you can just write it in one or two paragraphs. Explain
why it is important to conduct the study and how they can benefit from it.

If you have many beneficiaries, you can use the following format:

1. 1st paragraph- Why is it important to conduct this study?

2. 2nd paragraph- The main beneficiary – either a group or an organization
3. 3rd paragraph- The secondary beneficiary
4. 4th paragraph- The importance of the study to the researchers
5. 5th paragraph- The importance to future researchers

4

Do you know that your research may be significant to any or both of

these two aspects: (1) theory and (2) policy and practice?

Aspects of Significance
1. Significance for Theory

In this section of the problem statement, the researcher can outline the research
study’s contribution to fundamental knowledge by describing how the study fits into the
theoretical traditions in the sciences or applied fields in ways that will be new, insightful or
creative (Marshall and Rossman, 1995).

2. Significance for Policy and Practice

The significance of a study for policy and practice can be established by presenting
data to show how often the problem occurs and how costly it can be.

What follows are Benefits and Beneficiaries/Significance of the

Study from actual studies that may serve as your guide in writing
your own.

BENEFITS AND BENEFICIARIES OF

RESEARCH FROM ACTUAL STUDIES
1. Title of the Study: A Study of How Former High School Dropouts View the
Reasons they Dropped Out and Why They Returned (Cristina Grace
Brooks, 2015)
Significance of the Project for Social Work

A school social worker can be instrumental in helping to prevent school dropouts

(Jozefowicz, 2008). They can be involved in implementing, maintaining, and monitoring the
creation and integration of services for young adolescents. With the right training and
institutional supports, school social workers can promote student and school success and can
increase the knowledge of effective prevention efforts. Gaining insight from personal
experiences of adults who have dropped out of school in the past, can be used to help
construct more efficient and effective prevention programs.

Research from this standpoint needs elaboration in order to truly understand the
characteristics of dropping out of school, as well as the factors that contributed to re-enrolment.
This study provides additional support for the field of social work, providing more information
about students who are at risk of dropping out and how these factors are connected to the
educational system.

2. Title of the Study: The Effects of Computer-Assisted Instruction in the

Performance of Students in Asian History and Civilization (Cuenca,
2008(

The findings of this study may provide deeper insights on how teaching can be made
easier and more meaningful by the use of computer-aided instruction. The study determined
the significant effects of slide presentation in instruction, a form of computer instruction on
the performance of the students in the subjects Asian History and Civilization.

To the students, the results may serve as an inspiration for them to continuously
improve their skills in using computers because they will realize the comfort that computer
skills offer in complying with the requirements of major subjects in the coming years.

To the administrators, the results may serve as a guide in the program-planning

and implementation of the IT department so that they can be of great help to the teachers
of the university.

To the teachers, the results may serve as an eye opener for those who are not
comfortable on the use of computers in their class lesson presentations. The findings of this
study may encourage more of them to apply computer-aided instruction in teaching.

3. Title of the Study: Staff Nurses’ Roles on the Accuracy of Specimen

Collection in Selected Government and Private Hospitals in Bulacan:
Relations to their Work Performance (Reyes, 2007)

The results of this study will be of great benefit to the following:

Clinical Instructors. The results of the study will provide them research-based
information as to the extent of participation engaged in infection control. From the results,
they could identify which areas they need to enhance and improve as well as the areas
needed to be sustained for better implementation.

Head Nurses. This will provide a clear picture of the performance of their
subordinate nurses. This will enable them to give emphasis in supervising and coaching the
staff nurses so as to increase their level of performance. Furthermore, this will determine
the type of management skills that head nurses need to function effectively in the
organization and will shed light on areas in the current management practices that needed
to be worked up.

Nursing Personnel. This study will provide information on the extent of managerial
skills that the head nurse actually employs. This can be realized if these nurses become
aware of their behavior towards others which must be in accord with the standard values of
the nursing profession.

Directions: Read the foregoing text from the study of Rafanan (2012). Identify the
beneficiaries and benefits by completing the table. Use your answer sheet.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the on-going Scholarship Program of

the Municipality of Castillejos with the hope that findings would prove useful to the following:

The policymakers may review the existing Scholarship Ordinance and

consider certain amendments which are necessary for the improvement of the Scholarship
Program.

The implementers may consider the findings of this study in strengthening the
implementation of the program.

The scholars were given an opportunity to raise their sentiments regarding the
program and further benefit in the improved implementation of the program.

Public Officials in general may find that evaluation of public programs is

necessary in public administration and can be used as a powerful tool for them to know if the
program is delivering the intended impact.

And lastly the future public administration students may find this useful for
any program evaluation research.

BENEFICIARIES BENEFITS

Directions: The following are possible titles of studies. Write Significance of the Study
appropriate for each. Be guided by the rubric.
