This document summarizes a study on improving the dynamic behavior of irregular concrete buildings in earthquake zones through the installation of concrete shear walls. The study proposes relatively simple formulas and procedures for optimally placing shear walls to increase a building's strength, stiffness, and resistance to torsion and unpredictable behavior. The accuracy of the formulas was tested through simulations of 10 building models, showing they can accurately calculate shear wall needs and locations, especially for symmetrically designed buildings. Optimal conditions are more difficult to achieve for organically or randomly designed buildings.

buildings made of concrete before and after concrete shear walls are installed in strong earthquake zones Abstract. Indonesia is an earthquake-prone area, so building designs must be earthquake- resistant. One of them is the use of shear walls. It is very difficult to determine the requirements and optimal position of the shear walls and misplacement errors can trigger torsion and other unpredictable behavior. There have been various previous studies to obtain the optimal area and position of the shear wall. The first way is by trial and error but this method is not effective and takes more time. The second way is by using Matlab programming and this method is very effective because the needs and orientation of the shear wall can be determined precisely. But not all structural experts and architects master the programming language. For this reason, this study proposes a relatively simple formula and procedure for the placement of shear walls so that the optimal area and position are obtained. The accuracy test of the formulas and procedures was carried out with Etabs simulation experiments on 10 building models with various irregular categories. As a result, the formulas and procedures proposed by this study are quite accurate in calculating the needs and location of shear walls in buildings. Optimal conditions are quite easy to achieve in symmetrical geometric compositions (1 or 2 axes) while in organic or random geometric compositions it is quite difficult to achieve optimal conditions. When the use of shear walls in optimal conditions, the strength and stiffness of the building increases and the distribution of strength and stiffness is relatively even, so that deformation behavior can be anticipated and the eccentricity of the building can be reduced.
