Principle of the First Mention

1. GOD give favor on the firstborn by Abel

Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of
the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4 And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions
from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but
on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was
downcast.

Genesis 4: 3-5

2. People in the Bible understood the concept of first

Abram first built an altar when he migrated

3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between
Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier 4 and where he had first built an altar. There
Abram called on the name of the Lord.

5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.

Genesis 13:3-5

Jacob have buy the birthright from Esau

30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he
was also called Edom.[a])

31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”

32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

Genesis 25:30-32

Joseph named his firstborn son as a sign of his triumph on his struggles

50 Before the years of famine came, two sons were born to Joseph by Asenath, daughter of
Potiphera, priest of On. 51 Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh[a] and said, “It is because God
has made me forget all my trouble and all my father’s household.” 52 The second son he
named Ephraim[b] and said, “It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my
suffering.”

Genesis 41:50-52

3. GOD valued and concerned himself about the idea of first

13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every
womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”

3 Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out
of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand. Eat nothing
containing yeast.

Exodus 13:1-3

22 “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of
Ingathering at the turn of the year.[a] 23 Three times a year all your men are to appear before
the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel.

Exodus 34:21-23

6 On the fifteenth day of that month the Lord’s Festival of Unleavened Bread begins; for seven
days you must eat bread made without yeast. 7 On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do
no regular work. 8 For seven days present a food offering to the Lord. And on the seventh day
hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.’”

Leviticus 23:6-8
- Ang gusto ng Diyos iconsecrate nila ng una nila biglang pagalala sa kapangyarihan ng
DIyos
- So in reality, your first is a sign of your recognition of him as GOD.
- Your first work, your first money, the first of your time

4. GOD punished people on their first.

4 So Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. 5 Every
firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the
firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well.
6 There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be
again.

Exodus 11:4-6
GOD commands us to make him first.

A. GOD has put a promise of breakthrough in his commandment.

1These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances that the LORD your God has
instructed me to teach you to follow in the land that you are about to enter and possess, 2so
that you and your children and grandchildren may fear the LORD your God all the days of your
lives by keeping all His statutes and commandments that I give you, and so that your days may
be prolonged. 3Hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe them, so that you may prosper and
multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers,
has promised you.

4Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One. 5And you shall love the LORD your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Deuteronomy 6:1-5

B. Jesus echoed the first commandment as the greatest commandment.

34And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they themselves
gathered together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested Him with a question:
36“Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?

37 Jesus declared, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with
all your mind.’ 38This is the first and greatest commandment.

Matthew 24:34-39
HOW SHOULD WE UNDERSTAND THE COMMANDMENT

SEEK GOD IN YOUR LIFE BECAUSE IT WILL BRING BREAKTHROUGH IN YOUR LIFE

32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need
them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to
you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:32-34

1. GOD is the source of all things in your life

2. SEEK him more than anything in your life

SEEK in Greek zētéō (seek, search for, desire, require, demand)

– properly, to seek by inquiring; to investigate to reach a binding (terminal)

resolution; to search, "getting to the bottom of a matter."

3. SEEKING GOD must be a matter of your priority

PRIORITY IS A MATTER WHO IS THE FIRST IN YOUR LIFE.
