Capacity/Safety/Efficiency
To Optimise Ramp Capacity & Flexibility for Aircraft Parking –
Multiple Aircraft Receiving Stand (MARS)

Safety Concern – Confusion to

GHAs in the staging of
equipment for the Code C acft
on the right and for the larger
acft in the middle.
Solution - Maintain one
stringent equipment staging
area (ESA) to avoid GHAs’
oversight in staging equipment
in the wrong ESA.
To Optimise Ramp Capacity, Efficiency & Flexibility
for aircraft parking –
Power in Power Out Stands (PIPO)

HKIA Safety Concern –

Personnel & ground
Support equipment
could be subjected
to jet blast during
acft departures.
Solution - GHAs
are to vacate their
personnel and
equipment from the
stands.
To Expedite Aircraft Repositioning between
Contact Stand and Remote Stand
Tail - In Parking Configuration

Design Considerations -
Contact Stands

Location of Floodlights & ESA.

Safety Concern -
Personnel and equipment may
be subjected to jet blast if the
acft departs on its own power
from the remote stand.
Solution -
GHAs are to vacate their
personnel and equipment from
the stands before acft
departure.

Ramp Work Processes

 Different agencies and/or ground handling departments,

each with its priority in their tasks
 These agencies typically individualize their training in
ramp safety
 Time pressure and the need to complete their respective
tasks within the aircraft turnaround time
 Undisciplined/uncoordinated operations of equipment in
close proximity to an aircraft
 Are ground staff trained to see the invisible membrane
(the Circle of Safety) around the aircraft

Design and Operations of Airside Facilities –
with considerations to enhance the safety in
Ramp Work Process

 ADGS
 Jet Blast Fence
 Adequate Staging and Parking Areas for GSEs
ADGS

• Display of “STOP’ signal in relation to aircraft

stop Line position
• Line of sight of ADGS operator
• Adequate protection for ADGS operator
during wet weather
• Training and dissemination of Operating
Procedures – both ADGS operators and Pilots
ADGS Operator’s Line of Sight
Jet Blast Fence
Jet Blast Fence and Jet Blast Signage

Jet Blast Fence - Other than for Engine Run Up Stand, it

is required to deflect blast from aircraft during
pushback and taxiing.
Jet blast signage - installed at certain aircraft stands to
caution airside users of hazards arising from jet
effluxes and propeller slipstreams in the vicinity.

Environmental Considerations
System to support electric vehicle
operations in the airside
 Reduction in air pollution for workers’
health and environment protection
 Provision of battery charging facilities
at aircraft stands and baggage
handling area to minimize diesel
equipment operations, thus reducing
CO2 emission

Safety Considerations
Safety clearance from highly combustible
Liquid (e.g. Jet A1 Fuel): 15m
ICAO Annex 14 Recommendations –
5.3.27 Aircraft Stand Manoeuvring Guidance Lights

5.3.27.1 Aircraft stand manoeuvring guidance lights should

be provided to facilitate the positioning of an aircraft on an
aircraft stand on a paved apron or on a de-icing/anti-icing facility
intended for use in poor visibility conditions, unless adequate
guidance is provided by other means.

5.3.27.7 The lighting circuit should be designed so that the

lights may be switched on to indicate that an aircraft stand is to
be used and switched off to indicate that it is not to be used.
