TASK 1: Summarization
Direction: Summarize the legend entitled, “The Legend of the Magat River” in ten sentences ONLY.
“The Legend of the Magat River” is the story of a man who fell in love with a mysterious woman he
found in a large river. It is a tale about the girl who was swallowed by the river that spit her into a
beautiful girl. Then here’s come a hunter named “Magat’ – a strong willed young man. Eventually, when
Magat saved the girl, he proposed to marry her and spoof. The girl agreed but on one condition, that
Magat would not see the girl at noon. Later on, Magat was so curious about the girl’s activity at noon
and then he tried to discover it. He actually discovered the secret of the girl, then the girl died because
Magat broke his oath. Magat blamed himself for his wife’s death and he was worn out by sorrow. Magat
drowned himself in the very stream when he had met and rescued his wife. As the deep stream
engulfed Magat, it grew into a mighty river.
Who were Awiyao and Lumnay? How were they related to each other?
Lumnay – Awiyao’s former wife who is still in love with him despite the fact that he married another
woman.
Awiyao – The lead male in the story who loves Lumnay, but left her because she didn’t produce children
for him.
In the story, Awiyao is the husband of Lumnay and they had been married seven years but did not have
a child.
Why did Awiyao and Lumnay separate?
The reason for their separation was Lumnay’s inability to give Awiyao a child. According to their tribe’s
law “A man who marries a woman who can’t bear a child must leave that woman and marry another.”
So Awiyao and Lumnay had to separate despite their love for each other.
Madulimay is the woman chosen to be Awiyao’s new wife. She holds the promise of the continuity of
Awiyao’s lineage. So here, we have a forced love triangle.
According to the tribe’s law “A man who marries a woman who can’t bear a child must leave that
woman and marry another.”
Lumnay walked away from the dancing ground, away from the village because she did not have the
courage to break in the wedding feast. She thought of the new clearing of beans which Awiyao and she
had started to make only four moons before.
The Bean : represents abundance and fertility. Beans contain seeds which signifies fruitfulness. In the
end of the story Lumnay is seen in the company of the bean plants and there seems to be an envy felt by
Lumnay as she touches the plants for they are oozing with fruitfulness while she is fruitless.
Lumnay stayed single and still waited for Awiyao despite anything Awiyao had done to her ; that’s true
love. Awiyao also loved Lumnay but his decision was clouded by their tradition. In other words, Awiyao
didn’t choose love, instead he chose culture and tradition.
In the story, you’ll notice that Awiyao and Lumnay loved each other, but Awiyao married another
woman. This contradicts the quote “love conquers all.” It’s true love, that love cannot conquer all, if and
only if, you DON’T let love conquer all. It is not love that lets Awiyao marry another woman but it is
himself ; It is because of the tradition of their tribe. In order for love to win, you must need to let love
first before anything else. All things in the world change, but only true love is timeless. We must learn
how to evolve within the essential things in order for love to win.
