Most computer users around the world know of YouTube, and it is very likely that almost all of
them use it. YouTube was started in February 2005 by three young friends from California.
Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim were working for the online payment service
PayPal when they had the idea for YouTube, a site where people could upload and download
short video clips. The very first YouTube video was called “Me at the Zoo” and showed Jawed
Karim on a visit to the San Diego Zoo. The video was just 20 seconds long and it showed
Karim standing in front of the elephant pen, talking about the elephants. It was uploaded on
April 23rd, 2005, and is still available on YouTube today. In 2019, YouTube was the world’s
second most visited site after Google, and more than 500 hours of new videos were uploaded
every minute. The company announced that as of this year it had 1.9 billion registered users,

an incredible number! The United States is the country that watches the most YouTube,
contributing around 15% to site traffic. But YouTube is not exclusively an American site. It has
local versions in more than 91 countries and you can navigate it in more than 80 languages,
including Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian and Spanish. YouTube is also growing in live
viewership – in the first quarter of 2019, people watched 722 million hours of streamed content
on the platform. YouTube was sold to Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion.
