UNIT 1: LOOKING ANEW AT OUR BEGINNINGS

CHAPTER 1: THE BEGINNINGS: GOD’S CREATION AROUND US
(WEEK 1 AND 2)
ACTIVITY 1: “A Flowchart of God’s Continued Creation”
- Page 10 (format of the activity sheet on page 237 of the worktext)

1.) Show in a flowchart how God is sustaining life right now.

daily lives.

God gives us food to eat

because of the he
created it for our
health.

2.) Where do we get our essential needs (e.g., air, water, food)? How does creation
continually supply those needs?
- We got those things from our nature and because of God. He made those things to help
us and satisfy us. Because of God's creations we are able to live life much easier. God
provided all the sources of the needs we had today. We can get those by Working hard,
having a job and most of all pray to God for the provision of needs.
ACTIVITY 2: ‘Taking care of the Environment” Pages 15

1.) Why should we take care of our environment? What does the book of Genesis say on this?
Name at least three local organizations that promote care for the environment.

- We should take care of our environment because God said that we are the stewards of His
creation.
Some of the organizations that promote care for the environment are:
 Department of Environment and Natural Resources
 Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources
 Department of Agriculture

ACTIVITY 3: ‘GENESIS IS TRUTH” Page 17

A.) Write statements that express truths about ourselves, other people, our world, and God based
on the book of Genesis.

1. Myself - We need to trust in God no matter how hard because he knows what's best for us.
We shouldn't doubt him because he is our Creator and he knows us better than we
ourselves do.
2. Others – We interact with other people throughout our lives. Our yearning for intimacy is a
clear sign of our need for relationships.
3. The world – At the end of each creation day, God paused to view his creation, and find that
what He had created was good. God created us and the we live in to share in His life and
glory.
4. God – He is the creator. He is the origin and source of all reality and all life for all time.

B.) Write a prayer that expresses:

1. Praise for God’s power and wisdom as Creator of all;
2. Thanksgiving for God’s ongoing divine providence. You can name specific things you are grateful
for;
3. Repentance and sorrow for specific sins against the environment and sins against human
dignity; and
4. Petition for God’s help and protection for our world today.

- Almighty and loving God, we bow our hands to you and pray.
Thank you, Lord for the blessings you have bestowed on my life. You have provided me with
more than I could ever have imagined. You have surrounded me with people who always look
out for me. You have given me family and friends who bless me every day with kind words and
actions. They lift me up in ways that keep my eyes focused on you and make my spirit soar.
Savior, I have decided to faithfully serve you. I repent of my sins, and I am completely turning
my back against sinful habits. Henceforth, I will make you happy by living acceptable life before
you. O Lord, our redemption. Be our protection. Direct our minds by your gracious presence.
Watch over our paths and guide us with your love through the hidden snares of life. Fix our
hearts on you as we go forward, and following in faith, arrive at your goal; through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

ASSESSMENT: REVIEW Page 18

1.) Explain how scientific theories do not contradict with the truths of the Creation narratives.

- Since in the genesis we take consider that humans are created by God same as his appearance while in
the theory of evolution by Darwin that species tend to change gradually over time. People are still
fighting over evolution. If anything, the controversy has grown in both size and intensity. In the last
decade, debates over how evolution should be taught in schools

2.) What is our basis for saying that God is the Creator of all things?

- In a Christian perspective, the basis for saying that God is the creator of all things can be found
in the book of Genesis, in the Bible. It says there that God created everything in a span of six
days, and rested on the seventh day.

3.) Show the difference between the images of God in the two Creation narratives.
- The overlapping stories of Genesis 1 and 2 are contradictory but also complementary, with the
first (the Priestly story) concerned with the creation of the entire cosmos while the second
(the Yahwist story) focuses on man as moral agent and cultivator of his environment. The main
similarities between the two creation accounts are they both state that humans are made in the
image of God. The main differences between the two accounts are Genesis 1 focuses on the
creation of the earth but Genesis 2 focuses on the creation of human beings.

4.) Why does God create?

- God created everything for His glory.

5.) How does God continue to create today?

- God sustains all those beings He has created. Not truly creation, because they are already
created, but sustenance, of the created beings.

6.) What makes human beings unique and special creations of God?
- They have peculiar qualities that somehow reflect the nature of God Himself and set them apart
and above all other created beings.

7.) Explain the phrase “created in God’s image and likeness.”

- The image of God and the likeness are similar, but at the same time they are different. The
image is just that, mankind is made in the image of God, whereas the likeness is a spiritual
attribute of the moral qualities of God.

8.) From each of the Creation stories, quote specific verses about our God-given responsibility to
care for our environment.
- God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue
it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living
thing that moves upon the earth.”  (Genesis 1:26-28)

9.) Explain the meaning of “the interconnection of all creation.”

- The interconnection of all creation is not meant to serve human beings but on the contrary
human being are meant to serve and maintain the harmony and interconnectedness of all
creation. All creation is interconnected because it comes from God.

10.)What is the value of the Sabbath rest for us?

- The Sabbath is a day of delightful communion with God and one another. It is a symbol of our
redemption in Christ, a sign of our sanctification, a token of our allegiance, and a foretaste of
our eternal future in God's kingdom.

UNIT 1: LOOKING ANEW AT OUR BEGINNINGS

CHAPTER 2: THE FALL: ORIGINAL SIN AND ITS CONSECQUENCES (WEEK 2 and 3-4)
ACTIVITY: A Collage of Sin and Grace Page 22

ACTIVITY: Be a “Brother’s Keeper” Pages 31

1.) You catch your brother smoking in his room. Smoking is against your parents’ rules.
- If I catch my brother smoking in his room, first I will talk to him wholeheartedly because our
parent’s do not allow us to do smoking. I will explain to my brother that smoking is bad for his
health as well as to the people around him.

2.) After an argument with his parents, your friend tells you that he still plans to go out with his
barkada even if his parents did not allow him to go.
- I will tell him that he should listen to his parents because it is also for his safety. And I will
explain to him that there will be more next time.

3.) Your older sister is about to go out on a date with a guy who you know is a married man.

- I would probably stop my older sister to go out on a date with a married man. And I will tell her that
the guy she is dating is already married. Instead she can find someone who is single and available.
4.) Your brother wins first place in the National Quiz Bee.
- I will be happy and congratulate him for doing his best to win first place.

5.) Your sister gives her lunch and allowance to a young starving child.
- I'm going to praise her and give her some reward because she has the characteristic of being
kind and that she knows the value of giving.

6.) Your brother offers to sell his iPad to raise his money for parish.
- I will support his decision because it is a good thing to do. Also, I will help him to raise money for
the parish.

ACTIVITY: Naming Our Sins Page 37 (Format of the Activity Sheet on page 241 of your WT)

ASSESSMENT: REVIEW Page 38

1.) How does Genesis present the origin of evil in the world?
- Genesis presents the origin of evil in the world, for Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit,
therefore disobeyed God because they couldn’t hold the temptation of the snake, This
symbolizes Us as Adam and Eve who disobeyed God and the snake as the Devil who tempts us
to do sinful things yet God still blessed us with happiness and we can still be with him for he is
full of mercy.

2.) Why is the original sin called such? How does it affect us today?
- Original sin affects individuals by separating them from God, and bringing dissatisfaction and
guilt into their lives. On a world scale, original sin explains such things as genocide, war, cruelty,
exploitation and abuse, and the "presence and universality of sin in human history".

3.) What are the consequences of sin? Summarize them. What circumstances in our lives today
depict these consequences?
-  Sin can cause an internal conflict with God and us, leading to health issues and taking a
physical toll on your body. Depending on the sin you battle with, it can affect your blood
pressure, sleeping patterns or destruct your body depending on your lifestyle choices
because of sin.

4.) What does concupiscence mean? Describe a situation that illustrates its meaning.
- The definition of concupiscence is a strong desire such as lust. An example of concupiscence is a
man's unending desire for a particular woman.

5.) In a diagram, show the pattern of sin presented in the different sin narratives.
Sins

6.) What is the basis of our Christian hope that we must cling to even in the most evil of situations?

- Faith is the basis of our Christian hope that must never leave us even in the most evil situations.

UNIT 1: LOOKING ANEW AT OUR BEGINNINGS

CHAPTER 3: REVELATION OF GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION: STORIES OF OUR FAITH ANCESTORS
(WEEK 5 AND 6)

ACTIVITY: Dealing with New Situation (example: DISTANCE LEARNING MODALITY) Page 43

Share your experiences of facing and dealing with a new situation in your life (e.g., transfer to a
new school or a new house). How did you feel about such a change in your life? How did you
share this experience with God?
The effects of the COVID-19 panic has caused a massive changes to our daily lives, changes that have
often happened rapidly and abruptly. Life adjustments often come with a wide range of experiences and
emotions. Some people may find themselves in survival mode, gathering information and resources
necessary to function at school, work, as a person, and in our relationships with others.

Others may be attempting to settle into their new routines. For some, this means trying to combat social
isolation. For many, it means learning how to live with friends, family members, partners, or
roommates, which is not always easy. I hear a lot of people struggle to find a distraction-free space at
home that is conducive to do productive and effective work. For myself, I feel like it takes twice as much
time, effort, and energy to do even simple tasks, which can be quite draining. I’ve really had to be very
compassionate and patient with myself lately. Others may be struggling with the fatigue, frustration,
sadness, anger, grief, and anxiety (among other things) of adjusting. Some people (and I hope there are
a lot of you out there), have gone through the adjustment process and are finding comfort in your new
normal.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed, and will continue to change, the world and the way we work, rest
and play. If you are looking forward to coming out of lockdown and returning to the old normal, think
again. The current situation is tragic, heart-breaking and filled with fear and anxiety. However, there are
thin silver linings there if you look for them.

This is our chance to reinvent and create a better world where we can all work, rest and play in the new
normal. We cannot re-write the chapters of history already past, but we can learn from them, evolve
and adapt. The new normal may even be a better normal, certainly a different normal.

ACTIVITY: Abraham and Faith Page 47 (Format of the Activity Sheet on page 243 of your WT)

Read each statement carefully and choose a passage/episode from Genesis that confirms the statement.
Explain how your chosen passage/episode reflects the message of the statement.

1.) Faith is an unconditional acceptance of God’s word.

Passage/Episode: Abraham had faith. So he obeyed God. God called him to go to a place he would later
receive as his own. So he went. He did it even though he didn't know where he was going. - Hebrews
11:8

Explanation: When we have faith, we will listen to God and obey Him.

2.) Abraham obeyed God’s will even if it was the hardest thing to do.

Passage/Episode: “Go get Isaac, your only son, the one you dearly love! Take him to the land of Moriah,
and I will show you a mountain where you must sacrifice him to me on the fires of an altar.” (Genesis
22:2)

Explanation: Abraham was obedient to God and took his only son to offer him as a sacrifice to God.

3.) Being on the side of God sometimes requires us to take some risks.

Passage/Episode: "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all
peoples on earth will be blessed through you." Read Genesis 12:1-5

Explanation: A good example of someone who took great risks was Abraham (originally known as
Abram). Though the risks that Abraham took were huge, they were measured and balanced because he
knew the character of God. He trusted God.

4.) Questions, doubts, and weaknesses are all part of the process of growing in faith.
Passage/Episode: He also said to him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to
give you this land to take possession of it.” But Abram said, “O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I
will gain possession of it?” (Genesis 15:7–8)

Explanation: The first thing we can discern about strengthening our faith is our need to be transparent.
Abraham openly shares his struggle with God. He says, “O Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain
possession of it?

ACTIVITY: Jacob’s Ladder to God Page 57 (Format of the Activity Sheet on page 245 of your WT)

1.) Write on each rung of the ladder below the events that brought Jacob closer to God.
- Jacob wakes up and wants to worship this God.
- Using the stone that was his pillow during the night, he builds an altar.
- Jacob pours oil on the altar and gives it the name Bethel [meaning: house of God, holy place]. I
think it was Jacob's way of coming back to God, of drawing nearer to Him.

2.) What is the most important lesson that you have learned from Jacob’s life?
- From the very beginning, the two nations will be rivals. One nation will be stronger than the
other; and your older son will serve your younger son.” God started to orchestrate Jacob's life
when his parents prayed for him.

3.) How are you like Jacob? How can you bring yourself closer to God?
-  Just like Jacob we have a past with regret, shame, and failure. You can bring yourself closer to
God by going on mission trips, leading youth groups, Reading Bible, spending more time to his
word, go for a walk and talk with God.

ACTIVITY: Lesson from the Patriarchs Page 61 (Format of the Activity Sheet on page 247 of your WT)

- Give examples of how you can live out your faith emulating the examples of the patriarchs. List
an example for each patriarch.

Abraham – Abraham sacrificed his only son to God. I’ll also sacrifice what’s the most important to me
just to prove my faith.

Isaac – Isaac obeyed God and followed his commands. I’ll obey and follow what my parents’ orders.

Jacob – Unlike Jacob, I will never fall in love with my cousin.

Joseph - Unlike Joseph who bragged about his new tunic, I will not brag about my brand-new clothes.

ASSESSMENT: REVIEW Page 62-63

1.) Describe how God made himself known to each of the patriarchs.
- He made known himself to each of the patriarchs by appearing in a dream or in a vision.
2.) How did each patriarch respond?
- They respond by obeying what God has intended them to do.
3.) What lessons can be learned from the way God related to each of the patriarchs and the way
they responded to him? What does this say to us about how to live the Christian faith?
- The story of each patriarch can show a lot about our relationship with God.

Abraham- shows that if we trust in God completely he will always help us.

Isaac- shows that God works in mysterious ways, even if his ways are against tradition.

Jacob- showed us that God's people had grown to the point that they could be distinguished by
name and that the number of God's people is always growing.

Joseph- shows that since Joseph's brothers had meant to do harm to him, but everything ended
up okay, that God always has a plan for us, even if it isn't obvious at first.

4.) What role did each patriarch play in God’s plan of salvation in the Old testament? Explain
briefly.
- The patriarchs of the Bible, when narrowly defined, are Abraham, his son Isaac, and Isaac's son
Jacob, also named Israel, the ancestor of the Israelites. These three figures are referred to
collectively as the patriarchs, and the period in which they lived is known as the patriarchal age.

5.) Explain the connection between God’s call to the patriarchs and God’s plan for our salvation
today.
- The plan of salvation is the fulness of the gospel. It includes the Creation, the Fall, the
Atonement of Jesus Christ, and all the laws, ordinances, and doctrines of the gospel. Moral
agency, the ability to choose and act for ourselves, is also essential in Heavenly Father's plan.
