Moles and Molar Mass Notes

The Mole (mol) is a way of counting particles of matter.

1 mol of any substance is equal to 6.02 x 1023 particles (atoms or molecules)

1 ream = 500 things

1 mol = 6.02 x 1023 things

Atomic Mass (AM)- the mass of 1 mole of any element expressed in grams

1 mol H = 1.0g = 6.02 x 1023 atoms

1 mol C = 12.0 g = 6.02 x 1023 atoms Look up value from Periodic Table

1 mol O = 16.0 g = 6.02 x 1023 atoms

Gram Molecular Mass (GMM)- Mass in grams of a mole of a molecular compound

Gram Formula Mass (GFM) – Mass in grams of a mol of an ionic compound

Molar Mass – General term for GMM or GFM.

How to calculate Molar Mass

1. Must have correct formula

2. Find the Atomic Mass for each element (look on Periodic Table)

3. Add the totals together

4. Round to the 0.1 place

Example 1 Example 2

SO3 S 1 atom x 32.1 = 32.1 g Ba(NO3)2 Ba 1 atom x 137.3 = 137.3g

O 3 atoms x 16.0 = 48.0 g N 2 atoms x 14.0 = 28.0g

80.1 g/mol 0 6 atoms x 16.0 = 96.0g

261.3g/mol

1 mol SO3 = 80.1 g or 1 mol Ba(NO3)2 = 261.3 g or

6.02 x 1023 molecules of SO3 = 80.1 g 6.02 x 1023 molecules of Ba(NO3)2 = 261.3 g
