Instructional Plan
1. Introduce Project topic: Social Concepts of Beauty
a. In your table groups, talk about and create a concept map about what you think
“Social Concepts of Beauty” means. (5 Min – Elaboration)
b. Walk around each table and ensure they are making connections. If students are
stuck, suggest words/phrases such as:
• Standards of beauty
• Who decides what is beautiful?
• Culture
• How are men and women affected differently
c. Give students a 2-minute warning to finish up their concept maps.
2. Class discussion
a. Once students have wrapped up their concept map after the allotted time, create a
class concept map on the board with input from each group. (8 minutes –
Rehearsal)
• We are going to create a collaborative concept map with the ideas that
you all came up with.
• Table A, what is one connection or idea that your group came up with.
• Continue with each table
• Once all table groups have contributed, open up conversation for
individual students to continue to elaborate and make connections.
• Check for understanding – have students include the following on the
group concept map; if not, ensure to include in the class discussion and
creation of the map:
• What do we find beautiful? What exactly is beauty?
• Beauty assumptions
• Who creates the standards of what is beautiful?
• The affects beauty standards have on the way in which you
perceive yourself or others
• How men and women are affected differently by society’s concept
of beauty.
• Perception of self and identity.
3. Bringing it all together:
a. Pull up on projector and introduce Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait, The Two Fridas
(1939): (4 min – Elaboration)
• Kahlo deconstructed the conventions of beauty, and social
expectations she faced due to her cultural heritage, medical
conditions, and gender through her entire body of work. Looking at
this piece, what do you think Kahlo is trying to portray/address?
a. Choose 2 students to answer
• How does Kahlo use art to express her experiences regarding beauty?
a. Choose 2 different students, then open up for 2
volunteers, if they have anything to add about Kahlo
and her work.
b. Think about some examples of this being done today. Is this being done in pop
culture? On social media? Write down two examples in your sketchbook to
further investigate for inspiration and ideas.
4. Project Parameters (2 minutes- Rehearsal)
a. Our next project is called “I Remember a time when…”
b. In your sketchbook, write about a specific time within your life when you felt
that the social concepts of beauty affected you, discriminated against you, or
how it molded and shaped your perception of self or identity.
c. After you have completed your writing, create a piece, in your chosen medium.
d. When choosing which medium to use, consider how this medium helps to
portray your overall message or how it adds to the meaningfulness and
intentionality of the piece.
e. You can use the following media for this project: Graphite, Painting, Pastel,
Charcoal, Collage/ Multimedia, or Ceramics.
5. Check for Understanding (1 minute – Elaboration)
