This learning activity sheet was designed for grade 10 learners. It is
made to help the students to determine the next few terms of a sequence,
derive the explicit formula of a given sequence and illustrate an arithmetic
sequence. Sequence is a specific arrangement of numbers that follows a
certain pattern. Pattern is a rule of number or elements that is being followed
in determining the number or elements that comes before or after the given
element.
After you have gone through this learner activity sheet, you are
expected to determine the next few terms of a sequence and illustrate and
identify an arithmetic sequence.
Sequence
A sequence is a specific arrangement of numbers that follows a certain
pattern. It is often written as
a₁, a₂, a₃, …, aₙ for finite sequence and
a₁, a₂, a₃, … for infinite sequence
The numbers in a sequence are called terms, that is, a₁ is the first term,
a₂ is the second term, a₃ is the third term and so on. aₙ is the nth term which
is also called as the general term or nth term of a sequence.
If the last term of the sequence is given, the sequence is said to be finite.
Examples:
1. set of whole numbers less than 100.
2. 2, 4 , 6, 8, 10
3. the months in a year
Example 1.
Determine the next three terms of each of the following sequences.
a. 2, 4, 8, 16, ____, ____, ____
b. 1, 3, 9, 27, ____, ____, ____
c. 50, 42, 34, 26, _____, _____, _____
Answers:
a. 32, 64, 128
b. 81, 243, 729
c. 18, 10, 2
Example 2:
Write the rule or formula of the items in Example 1 by observing the
pattern of the sequence.
Answers:
a. Sequence can be written in table of values.
n 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 n
aₙ 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 ?
4
It means that the first term(a₁) is 2, second term(a₂) is 4, a₃ is 8 and so
on. By observing the pattern of the sequence, general term or the nth term of
the sequence is aₙ = 2ⁿ.
What do you think is the 12th term of the sequence?
Using the aₙ = 2ⁿ ,
a₁₂ = 2¹²
a₁₂ = 4 096
b.
n 1 2 3 4 n aₙ = 3ⁿ ¯¹
aₙ 1 3 9 27 ?
c.
n 1 2 3 4 n
aₙ = 50−8n
aₙ 50 42 34 26 ?
Example 3:
Find the first three terms and the 10th term of each of the following
formula.
a. aₙ = 2n²−3
b. aₙ = 3(2ⁿ) + 1
3𝑛−5
c. aₙ = 𝑛²
Answers:
a. a₁ = 2(1)²−3 a₂ = 2(2)²−3 a₃ = 2(3)²−3
= 2−3 = 8 −3 = 18 −3
= -1 =5 = 15
Arithmetic Sequence
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence where every term after the first is
obtained by adding a constant called the common difference. To determine
the common difference, use the formula d = aₙ - aₙ₋₁.
1, 4 , 7 , 10 , 13 , 16 , 19
Example 4:
Determine if the sequence is arithmetic or not. If it is arithmetic, write
the common difference.
