Many people believe that e-books will revolutionize the world of publishing as

more and more individuals self-publish, doing away with the need for an editor,
publisher, printer or even a conventional bookshop. Do you think this will have
a detrimental effect on the quality of books being published? What do you think
publishers can do to keep their businesses going?

In the last several years, ebooks have become a mainstay of the publishing
industry as a consequence of the upsurge in self-published books. This trend
sparks a controversy on whether self-publishing will have a negative influence
on published books. In my opinion, I agree with this statement and I am of the
opinion that conventional publishers should employ some methods to keep their
businesses going.

Undoubtedly, self-publishing will generally deteriorate the books being

published. Because there are no professional publishing services such as
editorship and censorship involved in the process of self-publishing, the books
may be ill-written, having grammatical mistakes and hard-to-read sentences, or
not appropriate to the general public. For example, some authors can bring
sexual or terrorism-related content, or fabricated information into their books,
which could cause small children, who are in impressionable years, to harbor a
desire of committing crimes as they are influenced by what is written in the
books.

Due to the rapid developments of ebooks, publishers are left with no choice but
to make changes to survive in the publishing industry. First, they can optimize
readers’ experiences by enhancing their printing quality. When it comes to
seeking books, the quality of books’ cover and paper would be on the top of
readers’ priority as it provides them with a tactile sensation of holding books.
Second, publishers can render their books more absorbing to draw the attention
of readers. They can keep themselves up to date with recent news and changes
to publish books that follow current trends, which could be more appealing to
others.

In conclusion, I believe that the quality of books is gradually deteriorating as

more and more individuals self-publish and conventional publishers should find
some ways to maintain their businesses.
