Picture Sort Cards:
Binder Cover, Spine,
Pocket Labels
• Use with Pre-A, Level A, and Level B
students
• Choose 2 Letters for students to
sort. Try to select letters students
know by name but not by sound.
• Pass out cards to students for the 2
letters. Tell them what the picture is
of as you do so.
• Either use the letter cards or write
the 2 letters on a whiteboard
• Review the sounds both letters
make
• Take turns having students say the
picture, say the beginning sound, say
the letter, and sort it under the
correct letter.
• “What is the picture? What sound do
you hear? What letter makes that
sound?”

1. Purchase binder and baseball card
pocket storage sheets.
2. Print off binder cover (use one of the
next four pages) and spine.
3. Print off letter labels onto address
labels that come to 30 on a sheet.
Test labels to ensure they print
correctly. Play with your settings to
get it right before you print. You might
have to increase the percentage 3 or
4% to get it right. Or, the labels have
been saved as one picture in the other
document. Manipulate the size to work
for your printer.
4. Place labels on the front of pockets
for each letter.
5. Print off picture sort cards. Laminate
and cut out.
6. Place cards in the appropriate pockets.
