Almost five million mobile phones were sold in the pre-Christmas run up, but more and more
people are becoming anti-mobile phones as these are now being blamed for many diverse
problems. Here are just some of the facts.
More phones means more masts. As many as 50.000 telephone masts could be installed
across Britain in the next two years. It has been suggested that radiations from these could be
linked to memory loss, epilepsy, and sleeping disorders.
Mobiles are said to make you feel safer, but this is a misconception since in reality they also put
you at greater risk of being mugged.* Thirty per cent of robberies are now related to mobile
phones. Adolescents are often both the victims and the perpetrators of these crimes.
New phone users were given leaflets by the government on the radiation risks of mobile
phones. Users are now advised to limit their calls and to discourage children from using
mobiles except in an emergency.
Parents often buy mobile phones fro their children to help them out in difficulties. However, this
is thought to be unhelpful since teenagers are believed to be becoming over-dependent on
phoning home every time they have a problem. It is better to solve problems yourself than to
have them solved by others all the time.
*Mug (v), mugging (n): attack someone to steal something from them.
