CONCEPT PAPER – English for Academic and Professional Purposes

Methods for Improving Our Mental Health in a Systematic Manner

Introduction:
Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being all contribute to our
mental health because they influence our thoughts, feelings, and actions. It
dictates how we respond to stress, interact with others, and make decisions in
our daily lives. Additionally, mental health includes cognitive, behavioral, and
emotional well-being. It is entirely dependent on how individuals think, feel,
and behave. At times, the term "mental health" is used to refer to the absence
of a mental disorder (Felman, 2020). Improving this type of health in our
bodies can be advantageous to our survival. While it is necessary to seek
professional support and treatment for our mental health, it is also necessary
to improve it on our own, as everything we do begins with ourselves.

Need for Study:

Many people today have been afflicted with mental health disorders long
before the onset of this terrifying pandemic. According to the National
Institute of Mental Health (2020), nearly one in every five adults lives with a
mental illness (51.5 million in 2019). Mental illnesses encompass a wide
variety of conditions that range in severity from mild to moderate to severe.
This finding alone demonstrates the importance of maintaining one's mental
health and engaging in activities that contribute to one's well-being.
Background of Study:
Several studies on the improvement of mental health have provided us
with practical suggestions for how to care for our well-being. Patricia
Hartneck, Ph.D., from The Seleni Institute's Women's Mental Health Matters
article published in 2015, provided "9 ways you can improve your mental
health right now." Those strategies she provided are excellent and practical.
She points out that while diet and exercise are important, so is opening up to a
trusted friend. Her methods for dealing with mental health issues include the
following:
1. Tell yourself something positive.

2. Make a list of something for which you are grateful.

3. Concentrate on a single task (in the moment).

4. Engage in physical activity.

5. Have a satisfying meal.

6. Let someone in on your innermost thoughts and feelings.

7. Do something to help someone else in need.

8. Take a break from your work.

9. Make sure you get enough sleep.

There will always be new information about ways to improve our mental
health available to us at any time. Dr. Hartneck's research provided us with a
better understanding of the subject and laid the groundwork for our future
research. As researchers continue to show an interest in the field of mental
health, many more points can be added to the list.

Objectives:
To achieve its original goal of discovering ways to improve mental
health, the concept paper is attempting to achieve this goal. The specific
objectives are as follows:
1. To discover new approaches to improving our mental health.
2. To determine the effectiveness of interventions and preventative
measures in the prevention of mental illness.
3. To assess our own psychological well-being and to provide long-term
treatment.

Research Questions:
1. What are some strategies for enhancing our mental health?
2. Is seeking professional help preferable to self-prevention in treating
mental health problems?
3. What is the state of our mental health at the moment, and how can we
find new ways to improve it?
Research Methodology:
This study will collect data through interviews, as well as through the
use of notes, pens, recording cameras and a laptop. Respondents are randomly
selecting HNVS grade 12 students. Only 10 students will be interviewed, and
their responses will be transcribed in order for the researchers to develop a
theme.

Research Timeline:
This study is expected to be completed by November 5, 2021, with the
following indicated durations for the following activities:
