In this paper we shall analyze the character of prince Lazar using the corpus of Vuk’s
second poem collection belonging to the Kosovo thematic cycle as data. We will reconstruct
the prince’s epic biography following the major phases of his lifecycle and the roles that
prince Lazar plays in these poems and the context in which they appear - family role, ruler,
warlord, martyr, saint. This type of research is primarily based on the topic-motive approach.
Through the analysis of the wedding motive, raising endowments, challenges to battle,
choosing the Kingdom of Heaven, beheading and consecration we shall point to the
complexity of the prince’s character and the relations he establishes with other characters. The
epic stylization of prince Lazar’s character shall be observed in accordance with the idea of
the Kosovo epic.
The subject of this paper, based on the corpus of the Kosovo thematic cycle of poems
belonging to Vuk’s and Bogisevicev’s collection, is the position, role and attitude of women
towards battle and men. The emphasis is on the female characters which are directly related to
the main heroes of the Battle of Kosovo. This paper examines the relations between these
characters, and reflects on the way women influence the formation of a hero’s epic biography.
On the other hand, the lyrical tone which the women contribute to the sublime, epic topic of
the ultimate battle is analyzed, because the tragedy of the very event is further emphasized
through the prism of their inner survival. The focus on the female characters also uncovers the
hardships heroes face on a personal, marital and emotional level. The characters of princess
Milica, Kosovo Maiden, the mother of Jugovic brothers, and the characters of Lazar’s
daughters, which appear in bugarstica poems and add to a different stylization of the Battle of
Kosovo, will be thoroughly interpreted.
