Define Tourism
There is no certain agreement for the definition of tourism as it differ from one person to another
or from one institution to another some here we can show some of the various definition of
tourism

Some define tourism according to the kind of service provided to the person who visit another
country as

"Tourism is a collection of activities, services and industries which deliver a travel experience
comprising transportation, accommodation, eating and drinking establishments, retail shops,
entertainment businesses and other hospitality services provided for individuals or groups
traveling away from home”

Other defined tourism according to the relationship between the partners who interact together to
provide the service of tourism as

"The sum of the phenomena and relationships arising from the interaction of tourists, business
suppliers, host governments and host communities in the process of attracting and hostin these
tourists and other visitors"

The UNWTO define tourism as "Tourism comprises the activities of persons traveling to and
staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for
leisure, business and other purposes."

And we have to distinguish between tourism and travel as travel is similar to tourism that a
person go from one place to another but they differ in many things as travel can be permanent
while tourism is temporary and also the purpose of tourism can be from one to another one my
go for entertainment, health care, religious purpose but travel have different purpose a person
may travel because he want to find better work, escaping from a certain economic or political
condition
Economic Impact of tourism

Tourism effect on the host country positively and negatively

Positive impact of tourism

1- Foreign Exchange earning

As tourist come to the host country this provide the country with hard currency that will
increase the income of the country which will support and enhance of the economic
growth of the host countries
2- Generate Employment
One of the positive economic impact of tourism that this field open and create job
vacancies that was not exist before and this will lead to decrease the unemployment rate
in the country for example hotels only in 1995 provide 11.3 million jobs due to tourism
3- Contribute in the government revenue
And this take two sides
a- Direct way : through taxes applied on people working on tourism as well as business
work in this field
b- Indirect way : through the taxes applied on the tourists for the survice and goods
supplied to the tourists
4- Improve the infrastructure
In order the government to benefit from tourism and generate income it must consider he
infrastructure by improving hotels, roads, water and electricity which will benefit the
country

Negative impact:

1- Infrastructure cost
As well as tourism benefit the government through improving infrastructure it also
through a heavy weight on the government regarding to the cost of this improvement
2- Price increase
 As the increase of the demand of the tourist on the local goods this will have a negative
effect on the resident of the host country cose this extra demand will push the cose up
3- Seasonal character of jobs
As tourism may not be continuous along all the months of the year this will reflect on the
temporary characteristics of the job provide which will be linked with tourism which
make the job lose the characteristic of security as the employee now may not have the
opportunity to have the same job in th future in another season

Motives behind tourism

There are different motives behind tourism which can be summarized in

1- Escape
Tourist like to travel to another place to escape from the long time working and tired
he need relaxation and comfort that is why some tourist like to enjoy and
entertainment in order to escape away from the tension of work
2- Desire
Some tourist seek satisfy their desire by tourism like who want to feel the heat of sun
in Sharm Sheikh or exercise some sports that he can’t do in his country like
snorkeling or diving and see the corals and fish
3- Religion
Some tourist travel to visit religious places like people who travel every year to
Saudia Arabia to go to Kaaba. or the prophet city
4- Health
Some kinds of tourist travel to places for health reasons
