1.2 About Experion PKS Upgrade Tool Components media

The Experion PKS Upgrade Tool Components media contains component-level migration guides.
It contains complete information about the migration instructions for a component with a
particular configuration.
The Upgrade Tool is installed and run from the Experion server. You can access the Upgrade Tool
from the Configuration Studio on the Experion server node. The Upgrade Tool is not available on
client systems.

ATTENTION
The Upgrade Tool option is available only if the user logging on to Configuration Studio is a
member of the Product Administrators group. You can use the Upgrade Tool on the nodes
which are on R400.1 or a later release. For more information, refer to the Experion
Upgrade Tool User’s Guide .

Until R501.1, site-specific migration guides could be generated only on Experion nodes using the
Upgrade Tool.
Starting with Experion R501.1, a new tool is introduced to generate site-specific migration guides
on non-Experion nodes. The new tool - Experion PKS Upgrade Instruction Management Tool is
available on the Experion PKS Upgrade Tool Components media.
You can generate site-specific migration guides for the following migration paths.

3 NEW FEATURES IN EXPERION PKS UPGRADE TOOL

COMPONENTS MEDIA

Component-level migration guides: With R410.1, Experion PKS Upgrade Tool Components media
contains component-level migration guides that are added to the available set of the scenario-
specific migration guides. The component-level migration guides provide the procedural details to
migrate a component from a base release to the target release. These component-level migration
guides are provided in the Experion PKS Upgrade Tool Components media and are converted by
the Upgrade Tool to generate the site-specific migration guides. You must refer to the site-specific
migration guide while migrating from the base release to the target release.
Site-specific migration guides (R400.x, R410.x, R430.x, R431.x, R432.x and R500.x to R501.x):
For migrations from R400.x onwards, you can generate a site-specific migration guide using the
Upgrade Tool. As per the site configuration, the Upgrade Tool combines the migration guides
available on the Experion PKS Upgrade Tool components media for the nodes/modules in the
Experion cluster. This document is automatically generated by the Upgrade Tool.
Each document describes a single supported migration scenario. This document is available in the
Experion PDF Collection media.

3.1 Component-level migration guides

With R410.1, a set of migration guides for the Experion component, is added to the available set
of the scenario-specific migration guides. The component-level migration guides provide the
procedural details to migrate a component or node from a base release to the target release.
These guides include complete migration instructions for each supported migration path and are
provided in an XPS format. The component-level migration guides are specifically for
R400.x/R410.x/R430.x/R431.x/R432.x to R501.x migration path.
The component-level migration guides are provided with the Experion PKS Upgrade Tool
Components media. The component-level migration guides that are provided with the product
media set contains complete upgrade instructions for a component having a particular
configuration. The Upgrade Tool generates the site-specific migration guides by using the
component-level migration guides. During the migration, you must refer to the site-specific
migration guides for the R400.x/R410.x/R430.x/R431.x/R432.x to R501.xmigration path.

3.2 Generating site-specific migration guide

The Upgrade Tool is installed as a part of the Engineering tools installation. It is used to check the
upgrade readiness of the nodes and its subsystems in an Experion system. With R400.x, the
Upgrade Tool can access an XPS repository to create the required site-specific migration guide.

-8-
Chapter 3 - New features in Experion PKS UpgradeTool Components media

Starting with R501.x site-specific migration generated from Upgrade Tool or Upgrade
Instructions Management Tool allows you to add custom text. In addition, a check box is available
on each page which can be used as a checklist to indicate the tasks completed and the tasks
remaining.
The Experion PKS Upgrade Tool Components media contains component-level XPS
documentation required by the Upgrade Tool and Upgrade Instructions Management Toolto
generate a site-specific migration guide for migrating to R501.x. The Upgrade Tool can combine
the component-level migration guides at the site as per the site configuration depending on the
nodes detected at the site. It merges the required component-level migration guides and creates
the site-specific migration guide. The site-specific migration guide is available in a XPS format. The
XPS format is available in C:\Program Data\Honeywell\Experion PKS\Upgrade
Tool\Data.

3.3 XPS viewer
