Lesson # 5

Lesson Objective: A) Students will recognize rhyming words. B) Students will increase
phonemic awareness by matching pictures that represent rhyming words.

Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2- Demonstrate understanding of spoken words,


syllables, and sounds (phonemes). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.A- Recognize and produce
rhyming words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2.C-Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel,
and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.

● State lesson objective
● Tell students rhyming is an important skill that will help them become better readers
and writers
○ Rhyming words are words that have the same sound at the end
● Read aloud- There’s a Bug in my Mug!
○ Ask students to listen to the sounds of the words and think about what they
notice about the words
● Introduce and explain the matching activity
○ Present the images of various objects
○ Have students name each image
○ Explain that the students’ job is to match the images that rhyme

Modeling: Whole group instruction


● Teacher will place images of objects on the floor so students can see
● Teacher will select an image and show it to students and have them identify it
● Teacher will direct attention to the mat and select its rhyming pair
● Teacher will place rhyming image on top

Guided Practice: Whole group instruction


● Teacher will then select another image and repeat modeling steps, encouraging
students to participate

Check for understanding:


● Teacher will ask, “Does ___ and ___ rhyme?” and/or “Do those two words sound the
same?”

Independent Practice:
● Teacher will distribute images to each student and invite students to engage in the
matching activity
○ Students will match pictures that represent rhyming words
■ Tk & K- students will match images and/or pictures that represent
rhyming words
■ 1- Students will match pictures and/or words that rhyme

Assessment:
● Teacher will walk around and record anecdotal notes on their proficiency

Closure: Whole group instruction


● Review lesson objective
● Ask students what rhyming words are
● Students will line up, teacher will hold an image and students will identify rhyming pair

Adaptations:
● Teachers will scaffold as necessary
● Visuals
● Tactile activity
● Students who prove proficiency will be given extra rhyming pairs
