Exam 2.

Heat transfer.
Boris Galvis PhD.
Chemical Engineering Program Engineering Faculty
Universidad de La Salle

In groups of a maximum of three students, design, build and test a double tube heat exchanger. It must
be an exchanger with at least one hairpin. The temperature increase in the cold stream must be at least
5 °C. You must document all the process in a video. The video must include:

1) The logos of the university.

2) The materials and tools list. Include the moment you bought the materials or where did you
found them if you reuse them. Include the price of the materials if you bought them.
3) The measuring of the internal and external diameters and lengths and all the assembling
process.
4) The experimental procedure to estimate the overall heat transfer coefficient clearly showing the
moment you took measurements of the temperatures of water in and out of the annulus and
tubes, and the flows of the hot and the cold stream.
5) The necessary calculations to estimate the overall heat transfer coefficient and the comparison
between the theorical and the calculation from the measured temperatures and flows.
6) All the problems you found when building the exchanger.

The video must not be longer than 20 minutes and should be fun to watch. Be creative. It must be
uploaded to YouTube and you must upload the link to the class website, with your names and written
document of your calculations and conclusions in pdf format. In the document describe anything new
you learn, all the problems you face when building the exchanger, and anything you found interesting
during the construction of the exchanger. Use photos, diagrams, and pictures. The technical quality of
the explanation, the thoroughness and the creativity of your work will be scored by your classmates and
the professor and will be accounted in your grade. Good luck.
