For my formative assessment, I decided to take out the “old school” warm-up of writing on a
piece of paper or giving the teachers a thumbs up or down, to show them how students are
feeling about today’s class or lesson. I found this amazing digital tool called MentiMeter where
educators can create interactive slides to include scales, word clouds, ranks, instructions, videos,
forms, and quizzes to promote engagement through an online format. In my specific example, I
made a scale where students are asked to join the presentation and to put themselves on my scale
of how they are feeling at the beginning of class. Since the results are live and immediate, this
allows me to see where they are mentally, physically, and if they are more excited or tired about
the class. I can then pivot my instruction and lesson to best fit the “mood” of the class and do
what I can to make it more tailored to their needs for that specific class period. I can also
implement this in the middle of class to see how they are taking in the content, or at the end to
get their reaction and opinions. This tool can replace lots of traditional methods that students
may dislike or be afraid of.
