Jessica: Hello and good morning everyone!

Before we further start, we’re glad to be here and to have the ability to
represent our group, which is the group 4 that consists me, Marc and Heleina. Today we are going to tackle an old
Korean story that was passed into many generations, this is the story of the Dutiful Daughter. We will be inspecting the
Characters and their important roles as well as the vocabulary development in the story. Before we jump into the topic
let us first tackle on what’s the story about.

Marc: The story is all about a high proclaimed man named “Sim Hyun” who was wealthy and well known in the Korean
village, as well as his wife that gives him peace and happiness. Time went by, they’ve decided to further reproduce their
last name by having a child. In some sort of way they can’t be able to have a child.

But one of the days, the wife of Mr. Sim mysteriously dreamt of a star. After moments passed. They mysteriously had a
third member of their relationship. Sim Chung where her mother’s elegant and graceful blood was passed into as long
with the blood of his father making her the child of Mr. Sim and his wife.

Sim Chung’s mother was held in the arms of death. Because of this tragedy Mr. Sim’s incandescent smile was faded into
a frown that took away his sight and his high proclaimed personality. The Hyun Family was went downhill ever since his
wife died. In a normal day Mr. Sim fell down a ditch where Mr. Sim and an old priest paths were crossed. The old priest
said there is a cure for his blindness but he needs to follow the according tasks that he will give. As what I said Mr. Sim
can’t be able to do these task so Sim Chung would be doing it instead. Can Sim Chung make it out alive?

Heleina: Now let’s pause here and let the other groups continue this story, now let’s proceed to the characters and their
roles on how they helped Sim Chung and her family. First we have Mr. Sim or known as Sim Hyun, he has a high profile in
the Korean village that made him famous and wealthy.

Jessica: Moving on we have the wife of Mr. Sim that left him gloomy because of his loss of a graceful woman with beauty
embarked on her face.

Marc: On the other hand we have the old priest of the temple that had a gloomy con towards the Hyun Family.

Heleina: We also have the one where the story revolves around who is Sim Chung that has a brave personality and a
determined goal to save his father from this hell-hole.

Jessica: One of the side characters in this story is the Merchant. He need to cross the ocean to get to China so he made a
deal with Sim Chung to give her three hundred bags of rice but in return she needs to sacrifice herself to the Evil Spirit
that lives in the shallow parts of the water. When Sim Chung dives into the water she met the Sea king or the “Evil
Spirit”. The Sea king accepted Sim Chung with open hands and treated her until she’s ready to leave.

Marc: She left the sea with no regrets as she floated up to the surface where she continued her journey. She met The
King where her heart was bound into. They had a bond with benefits. Now we’ve reached the end of the characters and
their roles, to sum this up how’s one to know that why are characters and their roles important? Anyone? Well if you’re
going to ask me the same question for me, it’s like staring at a blank canvas. It’s boring and it has no taste, it’s bland. So
the characters are there to brighten it and to add colors to the story.

Heleina: We’ve finished the roles that was implemented onto the characters, to start our new topic. Let us warmly greet
this topic with a quote that says “One forgets words as one forgets names. One’s vocabulary needs constant fertilizing or
it will die.” this quote was made by Evelyn Waugh that means vocabulary needs to contagiously reproduce or the name
itself would lost meaning or die.

Marc: Speaking of vocabulary, let’s dive into our new topic that covers up the Vocabulary development that was injected
in the story. Here let me introduce what’s under vocabulary development, in my opinion when I hear vocabulary all I
think is Diction, the usage of words and giving meaning to unknown words. Let’s further investigate these three.
Jessica: First we have the diction, these are the words being used in the story.

Marc: Next is the usage of words, this refers to how they affect the story and their importance.

Heleina: The last factor is the meaning. As you can already tell, it refers to what a word means. It’s one of the most
important factors in a story. Here, we have a few of the many words we found in the story that were unfamiliar for us.

Marc: First, the word deplorable was used to describe the condition Sim Hyun was in when he fell into a deep ditch. It
means deserving strong condemnation or, to put it simply based off the story, Sim Hyun was in a situation in which was
very inconvenient for him and could’ve gone without it.

Heleina: In the timeline of the story betrothals were very common. It is a process where two families make a deal or
agreement that their children will be wed when they grow older. A betrothed is the person you will have to marry. It is
commonly used for the benefits of each family. Sim Hyun’s parents betrothed him to a woman who was mentioned in
the story as the wife of Sim.

Jessica: Deteriorated means to become progressively worse. In the story it was used to describe the state of Sim Hyun’s
eyes as his daughter Sim Chung grew up. Other words you can use in place of deteriorated are, worsened, declined, or
collapse.

Marc: Trinkets or a trinket is a small ornament or item of jewelry that is of little value. Some would use it as a
placeholder instead of saying ‘’Random Things’’. It is used in the story when Sim was fallen into a deep grief therefore,
was unable to provide for his daughter, so he sold their households trinkets little by little to afford the basic necessities.

Heleina: Since we’ve discussed the meanings of a few words in the story, I want to ask you all, why do you think
vocabulary development is important in a story? For us it’d really important because if we would disregard our
vocabulary not only in a story but in real life we would be viewed as an ignorance person and that would make them
view us as a person that’s living under a rock. We’ve finished tackling our topic may I call out Jessika to give our fellow
classmates a farewell letter?

Jessica: So far, that’s our small presentation! We’re hoping you’ve learned things and we found this presentation
enjoyable! See you next time and farewell!
