The model answer which would cover all the point is provided below:

The reading and the lecture are both about one topic. It is the collapse of the

civilization on Easter Island. The author of the reading feels that there are only three

possible explanations for the collapse that appeared. The lecturer challenges the

statements made by the author of the text. He is of the opposition that these

explanations are wrong.

To begin with, the author argues that the end might have been caused by rats which

ate the seeds of palm and other trees. The article mentions that this was the reason

why erosion and soil loss. And it made it hard to grow food. This exact argument is

challenged by the lecturer. He claims that even if deforestation appeared the people

on the island would still have had enough food. Additionally, he says that 60% of

their diet came from the sea. Furthermore, they also used rock gardens to grow

potatoes in weak soil.

Secondly, the writer thinks that the collapse may have been the reason why ther is

warfare. In the article, it is said that many curved blades were used as weapons and

they have been found on Easter Island. The lecturer, however, rebuts this and claims

it by mentioning that the shapes of the blades give an idea that they were not

actually weapons. He elaborates and make precision on this by bringing up the point

such as they are neither sharp as well as nor pointy. Then they were probably just

used as tools for cutting something.

Finally, the author of the article posits that the society on the island would have

been destroyed by exposure to illnesses brought by foreign people. Furthermore, in

the article it is said that thousands of people died as a result of this. In contrast, the

lecturer's statement is that when contact with Europeans together with South

Americans began the population of the island people was only around 3000. He

notes that since the population was over twenty thousand before contact with them,

whatever caused the decrease would have started long before that moment.
